Portland is playing host to a different kind of headliner — not on stage, but on set.
Tyga, the hitmaking rapper behind early 2010s club staples, was in the city filming “Baby, You’re a Star,” a musical drama that marks his first leading role in a feature film, as revealed by entertainment publication Deadline.
Best known for breakout tracks like “Rack City,” Tyga rose to prominence after joining Lil Wayne’s Young Money Entertainment, quickly becoming a fixture on radio and in clubs. He later scored major hits with songs like “Taste” and “Ayo,” collaborating with artists including Chris Brown and Offset.
Now, he’s stepping further into film.
“Baby, You’re a Star” is set in 1989 and follows a young artist chasing success while grappling with identity and ambition. The film blends music and coming-of-age storytelling, with Tyga not only starring but also serving as a co-writer and producer.
He is joined by a cast that includes Madison Bailey from “Outer Banks,” and Ashton Sanders, alongside additional film and television talent. The project is directed by Arrad Rahgoshay, who is making his feature directorial debut after working in music videos.
His directing experience consists largely of music videos like Cardi B’s “Safe” and Latto’s “Big Energy.” He also filmed the opener for Hulu’s “The Kardashians” reality series.
The film has been in production in Portland in recent weeks, adding to the city’s growing reputation as a destination for film and television productions, and bringing a recognizable name in music to local streets and sets.
Recent films shot in Portland include Amazon’s Prime Video unreleased series “Criminal” starring Emilia Clarke and Charlie Hunnam, and romantic comedy “Wishful Thinking, which debuted at the SXSW Film & TV Festival earlier this year.
In addition, Netflix’s “Night Always Comes” and “Twinless,” which are currently streaming on Hulu, were produced in the city.
A release date for “Baby, You’re a Star” has not yet been announced.
