Megyn Kelly laughed out loud when Russell Brand cracked a dark joke about his upcoming rape trial, quipping that facing criminal proceedings in a British courtroom would actually come as a relief.
The moment came near the end of an interview on The Megyn Kelly Show as the two were trading jabs about Brand’s ex-wife Katy Perry and her new romance with former Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau.
“Keep checking,” Brand said on whether Perry, 41, and Trudeau, 54, were still together, as he ripped into the former politician. Brand’s comments came after he confirmed sleeping with a 16-year-old girl when he was 30, and denied any wrongdoing.
Brand, 50, said about Perry and Trudeau’s romance: “She could come to her senses any minute. It is disappointing, isn’t it, when your ex gets together with somebody who doesn’t make you look good at all. Doesn’t increase the average at all.”
When Kelly pointed out the category Brand now found himself in alongside Trudeau, Brand recoiled.
“Look at the category I’m in now,” he said, referring to being one of Perry’s past romantic interests. “I’m in with Trudeau. It’ll be a relief to be in a rape trial.”
Kelly burst out laughing, saying, “Never lose your sense of humor,” adding, “Not even about the dark.”
Perry has not publicly commented on the specific sexual assault allegations made against her ex-husband, Brand.
Brand, who is scheduled to stand trial in October in the United Kingdom on rape and sexual assault allegations, has denied all wrongdoing.
Kelly told Brand she had initially believed the allegations detailed in a 2023 Channel 4 documentary, saying she told her audience at the time that “the conservative movement doesn’t need somebody like that – if this is a guy who’s sexually assaulting women and taking advantage of 16-year-olds, we need to move on without him.”
However, she confirmed that she has since reconsidered.
“The more I looked at it, the more I started to recognize I might not know the full story,” Kelly said.
Brand added, “What being famous and being, if I may say… forgive me – charismatic, affords you is the ability to direct consent. That doesn’t mean it’s right. It’s actually not right. It’s wrong. It’s a sin. It’s an expression of selfishness and false idolatry.”
