Their Majesties will be in the US for a few days, visiting Washington, D.C., New York City and Virginia. It will be the first time King Charles has visited the US as a reigning monarch. While it is believed King Charles will be looking forward to the state visit, it seems the British public does not necessarily feel the same.
This is because a new IPSOS poll of 1,072 British adults – run between April 17 and April 21 – showed that only 42% of Brits think the state visit should go ahead.
A total of 43% said it shouldn’t go ahead.
The poll also found that four in ten Britons think that King Charles visit to the US will not make a difference to Britain’s relationship with the US – a major factor in why the state visit is going ahead.
Only a third think it will have a positive impact on the “special relationship” between the two countries.
In another blow ahead of the US state visit, the poll also found that almost half of Britons disagree that there is a special relationship between the US and Britain anymore.
When asked whether the trip could help improve relations with the UK in a phone interview with the BBC this week, the US President said: “Absolutely. He’s (King Charles) fantastic. He’s a fantastic man. Absolutely the answer is yes.
“I know him well, I’ve known him for years. He’s a brave man, and he’s a great man. They would absolutely be a positive.”
