Fans were emotional to learn that Hollywood legend Jane Fonda would be the commencement speaker at Hunter College’s 2026 graduation ceremony.
Jane was previously the commencement speaker at the University of Southern California in 2025.
Jane Fonda is stepping into a role that’s sure to inspire.
For nearly 70 years, fans have watched the legendary star reinvent herself time and again. From winning multiple Academy Awards to starring in hit shows like Grace and Frankie, and becoming a powerful voice in activism, Jane has built a life rich with experience. It’s hard not to see her as someone with stories worth telling and lessons worth sharing.
Jane will soon be putting some of her biggest lessons to good use. On April 22, it was announced that she will serve as the commencement speaker at Hunter College’s 2026 graduation ceremony on June 4.
“Attention, Hawks! We’re proud to announce that our 229th Commencement speaker will be the legendary Academy Award–winning actor and lifelong activist @JaneFonda!” the caption read alongside a headshot of Jane on Instagram. “A trailblazer on screen and a powerful voice for social change, she brings decades of impact, advocacy, and inspiration to this milestone moment. We look forward to celebrating the #ClassOf2026, and to hearing Jane Fonda’s message on June 4 at Barclays Center!”
Given Jane’s massive fanbase, folks were thrilled to see her pursue this emotional career move.
“What a great choice! 👏🏽💜,” one person applauded in the comments. “😮 NO FREAKIN’ WAY!!!” another exclaimed. “Wow, that’s amazing!” a different follower added.
This isn’t the first time Jane has been a commencement speaker. She also spoke at the University of Southern California’s Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism in May 2025.
Hunter College leadership was also thrilled.
“It’s hard to think of an American cultural figure who has done more than Jane Fonda to both entertain and to challenge us,” Hunter College President Nancy Cantor shared in an official statement. “For seven decades, her prodigious talent has been matched only by her commitment to social justice and using her platform to focus our attention on urgent issues of the day, from women’s rights, civil rights, and human rights to racial justice, world peace, and global sustainability. She is perfectly positioned to inspire our students at this inflection point in their lives as they prepare to use their Hunter education to make a difference in the world.”
