King Charles’ 4-day trip to the U.S. will proceed as planned after palace security expressed concerns following the shooting in D.C. targeting the Trump administration.
A Buckingham Palace spokesperson said, “Following discussions on both sides of the Atlantic through the day, and acting on advice of Government, we can confirm the State Visit by Their Majesties will proceed as planned.”
“The King and Queen are most grateful to all those who have worked at pace to ensure this remains the case and are looking forward to the Visit getting underway tomorrow,” Cameron Walker, the Royal Correspondent at GB News, tweeted.
King Charles said he is “relieved” that his hosts remain unharmed following the shooting outside the White House Correspondents Association dinner on Saturday night. Officials were earlier assessing whether the incident necessitates modifications to the state visit itinerary, which begins Monday.
Earlier, a Buckingham Palace spokesperson said the King is “being kept fully informed of developments and is greatly relieved to hear that the president, First Lady, and all guests have been unharmed.”
The statement continued, “As you would expect, a number of discussions will be taking place throughout the day to discuss with U.S. colleagues and our respective teams to what degree the events of Saturday evening may or may not impact on the operational planning for the Visit.”
The King and Queen privately reached out to the Trumps to share their sympathies with those affected and their appreciation for the security personnel who averted additional casualties.
The annual White House Correspondents’ Association dinner descended into chaos last night when Secret Service agents evacuated the president and other dignitaries following gunshots in the ballroom. Trump, who has previously survived an assassination attempt, was quickly whisked away by Secret Service personnel alongside other high-ranking administration officials.
One law enforcement officer who sustained a gunshot wound but was shielded by body armor was transported to a medical facility.
The alleged perpetrator, reportedly armed with a shotgun and handgun, has been named as Cole Tomas Allen, 31, from Torrance, California. It is believed he was staying at the Washington Hilton hotel, where the dinner event was taking place.
