NEW YORK (PIX11) — On Monday, King Charles and Queen Camilla will make their first visit to the U.S. since becoming British monarchs. It was arranged to celebrate the 250th anniversary of American independence.
For months, the royal visit has been planned with pomp and circumstance, beginning on Monday in Washington, D.C., then onto New York City on Wednesday.
But after Saturday night’s shooting incident at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, with President Donald Trump being rushed out and reporters diving under tables for cover, there were concerns over the safety of England’s king and queen.
However, the Royal family will still make the trip. Buckingham Palace released a statement after the incident, saying, “Following discussions on both sides of the Atlantic through the day, and acting on advice of government, we can confirm the state visit by the majesties will proceed as planned.”
It’s a decision that former FBI special agent, Navy commander and pilot Richard Kolko agreed with.
“[Security teams have] rehearsed this, they’ve practiced this,” Kolko told PIX11 News. “The countries are used to working well together.”

The visit begins with a formal welcome at the White House and a private tea ceremony with the President and First Lady. King Charles is expected to deliver an address to Congress on Tuesday, followed by a banquet at the White House before the couple heads for New York on Wednesday.
The pair will fly to the Big Apple to attend a wreath-laying ceremony at the 9/11 Memorial with Mayor Mamdani in attendance. It’s believed they will also visit Harlem.
One of Queen Camilla’s stops on Wednesday is expected to be at the New York Public Library to donate a new Roo doll to add to the library’s Winnie the Pooh collection.
