I’m A Celebrity South Africa’s car-crash final has raised countless red flags.
I’m A Celebrity South Africa’s live final has officially made it to the history books for all the wrong reasons.
What should have been a celebratory moment for winner, actor Adam Thomas, turned into one of the worst nights of his life and he was unable to hide his rage.
Tensions had already built between Thomas and his campmates Jimmy Bullard and David Haye, with hosts Ant and Dec even calling out their unpleasant behaviour.
For the first time, Ant McPartlin’s impartiality seemingly went out of the window following reports he was involved in a “sweary ad break rant” with Bullard.
The conflict was always going to reach boiling point – so why was the live final still allowed to happen?
The sick truth is that more conflict means higher viewership – audiences love a bit of drama, even if it is at the expense of those involved.
Thomas is by no means completely innocent in all of this, but he admitted his faults and was keen to move on.
Unfortunately for him, he looked visibly defeated as Bullard and Haye were given a platform to continue to air their grievances.
Ahead of the event, did anyone stop and think, ‘Perhaps this isn’t a good idea?’ – The likelihood is, viewers were already rubbing their hands together with glee at the thought of a live bust-up.
Knowing there was unfinished business, surely the right thing to do would have been to call the live final off?
Viewers still would have been able to take control by voting for their winner via the I’m A Celeb app, and it would have saved the cast the humiliation.
Unfortunately, diplomacy doesn’t sell when it comes to reality TV, a genre often defined by over-the-top theatricals.
Days after the live final, it is still one of the most talked-about moments on TV, but what has anyone really gained from this farce?
Thomas certainly doesn’t feel like a winner, the other campmates are most likely still reeling with embarrassment, and there’s bound to be a lot of questions surrounding the handling of the situation. So – was it all worth it for the ratings?
