Sydney Sweeney’s “Christy” flopped hard at the box office last year, ranking as one of the worst starts for a movie ever. But now, the sports biopic is one of the top trending movies on HBO Max, according to the streaming service’s public ranking system.
Directed by David Michôd, “Christy” recalls the real-life story of former boxing champion Christy Martin (Sweeney). The film follows her ascent to becoming the most successful female fighter of the 1990s while detailing the struggles she faced outside the ring — including being misunderstood by her family in her closeted personal life and subjected to brutal abuse by her husband/trainer, James Martin (Ben Foster), who nearly killed her in 2010.
The film also stars Merritt Wever, Katy O’Brian, Ethan Embry, Coleman Pedigo, Jess Gabor, Chad L. Coleman, Tony Cavalero, Bill Kelly and Bryan Hibbard.
The biopic debuted Nov. 7 in theaters to $1.3 million, according to data from Box Office Mojo, but plunged to just $108,487 the following weekend — a drop that ranks among the top 10 all-time-worst openings on more than 2,000 screens, and marks the steepest second-weekend decline for a film on record, according to Entertainment Weekly.
Per Variety, Sweeney shrugged off the box office disappointment at the time in a since-deleted Instagram post, writing, “We don’t always just make art for numbers, we make it for impact.”
She added, “And ‘Christy’ has been the most impactful project of my life.”
