THE RUNDOWN
- Benny Blanco and Barry Keoghan spoke on Friends Keep Secrets about the mean comments they’ve received about their appearance.
- Blanco told the actor that he is unfazed by people calling him “ugly,” sharing one post he found funny featuring him, Keoghan, Taylor Swift’s fiancé Travis Kelce, and Ariana Grande’s partner Ethan Slater.
- The music producer revealed that even Gomez is surprised by how he handles the online hate he receives.
Benny Blanco is aware of the comments people make about his appearance, especially in comparison to his wife Selena Gomez—and he also knows he copes with the criticism differently than other people with famous, beautiful partners.
On his podcast Friends Keep Secrets, Blanco and guest Barry Keoghan, who faced similar scrutiny while dating Sabrina Carpenter, spoke about how they feel about the noise.
“There is a lot of hatred about me for just looking like this,” Keoghan said.
“I want to tell you something though, because I’m a guy who couldn’t be talked about more,” Blanco told him.
Keoghan then cut in, asking him if he saw a post with their faces together that had 20 million views, “being like, ‘How ugly are they?’”
“Oh my God. Dude, you’re hot,” Blanco objected. “You’re much hotter than me.”
He stressed that Keoghan is a “movie star,” adding, “I have never even seen a bad thing about you.” He then brought up a post that a few of his friends sent him that poked fun at him, Keoghan, and two other men dating pop stars: Ariana Grande’s partner, Ethan Slater, and Taylor Swift’s fiancé, Travis Kelce.
“I find it very funny where it’s like me, you, and Travis Kelce, and then like the guy who Ariana dates, and it’s like, ‘Which one of these like ugly bastards would you want to date?’” Blanco said. “And then they’re like, ‘Their girlfriends.’”
“I don’t mind that,” Keoghan said.
On a more serious note, Blanco then acknowledged the emotional toll of the remarks. “These things sometimes in our heads seem so fucking huge,” he said. “I’m not gonna lie to you; I’m sure it’s huge.” Blanco, however, said that he is “not a comments guy and when I do [see them], when like [my friends will] tell me, [it’s] because they know I have like the thickest skin.”
He also revealed that his ability to be so unfazed surprises Gomez, who is more affected by the comments about him.
“Selena will come to me, and she’ll be like, ‘I can’t believe how well you can [cope]’—she’s like, ‘I’ll see things, and I’ll want to write back in the comments about things,’” he said. “[But] I have a very unique perspective. For me, I became really big in a certain field when I was 17, 18 years old. I’d been doing it publicly since I was a kid. Then I got to help all these other stars get their thing going. I didn’t become famous until 2020. So it’s only been like six years for me….I got famous and then I was like, I don’t like this.”
