Olivia Rodrigo wouldn’t officially comment on her relationship status to Cosmopolitan months after Louis Partridge breakup rumors emerged. But the star, who is releasing her third album in June, hinted that her focus is on friendship these days in an interview with her close friend Madison Hu.
Hu asked Rodrigo what phase of love she was currently in. “Oh my god. I’m in the most important phase, the friendship love that I’m sitting right across from,” she said. “Best friend, community love. Dating is just the cherry on top.” (The most Rodrigo would say about Partridge himself was that the day she played Glastonbury last year, with him cheering her on, was one of the best days of her life.)
The two friends spoke a little more about whether or not they are critical of the people the other dates.
“It’s not us judging each other,” Rodrigo said. “And the partner is neither here nor there. It’s us like, Who is my friend in this relationship? How does this person make her feel about herself? Is she happy?”
“And Is my best friend showing up as her authentic self with this person?” Hu added. “Do you think our relationship has informed the way you’ve gone into romantic relationships?”
“No,” Rodrigo replied. “We probably should integrate it, to be honest. Although, you’re a Gemini, and three of the five guys I’ve dated in my life have been Geminis.” (Partridge is a Gemini, along with Adam Faze and Zack Bia.)
The singer discussed why it’s important to her that her potential partners get along with Hu. “[It] is one of my stipulations if I want to date someone: Would they be okay sitting and hanging and playing cards with me and Madison? If they can’t hang with that, then they can’t hang with me. Your partners have not been similar to me at all.”
“Not in any way,” Hu said. “But I will say I’m looking for the feeling of comfort that I feel with you. And the amount of fun that I have with you, I want to have with my partner as well.”
“But no guy has ever made me laugh as hard as you’ve made me laugh,” Rodrigo admitted. “Not even a quarter.”
The two friends’ discussion marks Rodrigo’s second interview this year where she has spoken about her stance on dating while avoiding addressing her relationship with Partridge.
In her April 2026 British Vogue interview, Rodrigo made it clear she prefers to let her art speak about her romantic life. Still, she also hinted at being single, saying at this point in her life, she is seeking meaningful connection: “Romantic relationships, friendships, diving as deep into those as I possibly can.”
When she looks at dating overall, including situationships, she notes the difficulty in finding great love. “Relationships these days are so weird!” she said. “I don’t know if you find that. I’m definitely a lover girl. Like, I want to be in something committed and so in love. And yeah, it’s hard these days.”
Rodrigo’s new album, You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love, will be released on June 12.
