Nick Reiner appeared in court on Wednesday, April 29, for a pretrial hearing concerning the brutal slaying of his parents in December 2025.
Nick, 32, son of acclaimed Hollywood director Rob Reiner, 78, and Michele Singer, 70, is facing two counts of first-degree murder with a special circumstance after the couple was discovered stabbed to death inside their Brentwood home on December 14. During the court appearance, the judge scheduled a new hearing for September 15, citing delays in completing the autopsy reports.
The Los Angeles Times reported that the case was partially postponed due to delays in obtaining the autopsy reports of his parents. It remains unclear why the reports had not been finalized more than four months after the deaths of Rob and Michelle.
Nick arrived in court dressed in a yellow prison shirt and blue prison pants, sporting a short haircut. He remained largely silent throughout the proceedings, responding only with “Yes” to a handful of questions posed by Judge Sam Ohta, including whether he understood and agreed to the postponement of the case until the fall. During a brief hearing in downtown Los Angeles, Deputy District Attorney Jonathan Chung disclosed that prosecutors still have nearly two terabytes of discovery materials to hand over to the defense. He also confirmed that autopsy reports in the case had yet to be finalized, reports the Mirror US.
Although Rob and Michelle’s autopsy reports remain incomplete, the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner confirmed that both deaths resulted from multiple sharp force injuries. Their deaths were officially classified as homicides, with both victims succumbing within minutes of the attack.
The couple’s deaths prompted a homicide investigation, leading to Nick being taken into custody on suspicion of murder.
Prior to these events, Nick had openly spoken about his battles with mental health issues and substance abuse. He had previously addressed his addictions to heroin and cocaine and had undergone rehabilitation 18 times. He was also previously diagnosed with schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder, a condition characterized by a combination of psychotic symptoms and mood swings.
