Events in Augusta during May

May is a month for new beginnings. School’s close for the summer, pools open, vacations, outdoor cooking, and lots events are happening. The Augusta Chronicle has compiled of list of some of the May events with links for more information.

Enjoy the Kentucky Derby and help a good cause at the Derby Day Party benefiting the Augusta Training Shop. The party is from 4-8 p.m. on Saturday at the Evans Market Pavilion on Market Street in Evans. Watch the races and enjoy raffles, games, live and silent auctions, and games. There will be a Ladies Hat Contest, a Ladies & Gentlemen Fashion Showdown, and a Southern-inspired menu and beverages. Tickets are $100 and are sold only in advance at www.augustatrainingshop.com/derby-days.cfm. Food and beverages are included in the ticket price.

Summerville Porchfest is a free event from 1-5 p.m. on Sunday, May 3 where front porches and yards in historic Summerville become stages to showcase local musical talent for a day. At 6 p.m. there will be a free afterparty at Midtown Tavern at 1855 Central Ave. with music by She+She. A list of performers, times, and locations – all within walking distance of each other – is available at www.summervilleporchfest.com. And interactive map with the music genres and links also is on the website.

For a “A Funky Good Time,” celebrate the birthdays and music of two of Augusta’s music legends – James Brown and Sharon Jones – on Saturday at the Augusta Museum of History on Reynolds Street. The free event will be from 1:30-3 p.m.. There will be music and dancing playing in the rotunda, a performance by J.A.M.P., crafts, and birthday cake. For information email [email protected].

Starting a garden? The Pendleton King Park 27th Annual plant sale will be from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. on Saturday at the Franke Pavilion at the park at 1600 Troupe St. in Augusta. There will be a large variety of annuals, perennials, vegetables, and some unusual plants for gardens or households.

Get your tickets for Dr. Seuss’s The Cat in the Hat – Live on Stage! coming to the Columbia County Performing Arts Center on May 7 at 6:30 p.m. Ticket prices range from $36 to $71 and can be purchased through Ticketmaster. It’s Ladies Night on May 8 from 5-9 p.m. at the Evnas Towne Center Park. There will be boutique shopping, live music, food and drinks, and a free photo opportunity.

The Augusta Symphony will perform Symphonic Dances at the Miller Theater on May 9. The symphony will be performing masterworks by some of the greatest composers in history. The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. and doors open at 6:30 p.m.. Tickets are $19-$82. The Fox Creek High School Marching Band will sponsoring a car show from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. on May 16 at 165 Shortcut Road in North Augusta. There will be awards, food and music. There’s a $25 entry fee due the day of the event and no pre-registration is required.

Catch the popular film Mamma Mia! at The Miller Theater at 708 Broad Street in Augusta from 2-4 p.m. on May 17. Admission is free, but tickets should be reserved in advance. Seating is first-come-first-served and doors open at 1 p.m. Visit https://www.millertheateraugusta.com for tickets.

Stand-up comedian, podcaster, and Georgia native John Crist brings his show to the Columbia County Performing Arts Center on May 15. The show begins at 7 p.m. and ticket prices range from $37 to $117. For tickets, visit https://www.ticketmaster.com/event/0E006341C52B3BCC.

The inaugural two-day Augusta Music & Songwriter Festival will be May 15-16 at the Augusta Common. The festival will feature regional and national talent, including Big K.R.I.T., Anthony David, Shawn Mullins, Trap Jazz, Angie Aparo, Elli Perry, Travis Shaw, AE the Cool, Muz Mercer, Judge Wood, and more to be announced. The Evans Market is open every Saturday through June 27 at 1005 Market St., in Evans. The market is open from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. and there’s no admission charge.
