The popularity of the Queen has been clear for all to see, with one former royal butler reflecting on how this is completely different to 20 years ago.
This is because when Queen Camilla and King Charles wed in 2005, Camilla – who then was the Duchess of Cornwall – was still facing some public hostility as she was the woman Charles had an affair with when he was married to Princess Diana.
Grant Harrold, who was Charles’ royal butler from 2004 to 2011, said that when he worked for the couple and Camilla joined the Royal Household, some people he knew who disliked Camilla would not talk to him.
Talking on The Royals Uncensored podcast, which launched this week, Grant said: “When she (Queen Camilla) joined the household, a lot of people who knew that I was working there – especially around the time of the wedding – some wouldn’t even speak to me. Because of the whole history with Diana and everything.”
While Queen Camilla has gone up in popularity over the last few decades, she has spoken previously about how hard life was when the world found out she had been romantically involved with King Charles – then The Prince of Wales – while he was married to Princess Diana.
She remained unpopular when she first started dating Charles publicly a few years after Princess Diana’s 1997 death.
In 2017 in an article in The Mail on Sunday’s You magazine, Camilla said: “I couldn’t really go anywhere. But the children came and went as normal – they just got on with it – and so did great friends.
“It was horrid. It was a deeply unpleasant time and I wouldn’t want to put my worst enemy through it.”
Grant Harrold, who worked for Charles and Camilla, has always been complimentary of the royal couple, especially regarding their sense of humour.
