Legendary guitarist Bobby Murray has died.
He was 72.
The Detroit Blues Society shared the news of his death on social media.
“The Blues community is saddened to hear of the loss of one of Detroit’s best loved musicians Bobby Murray,” it shared in a statement on Facebook. on April 30. “He passed away this morning. Bobby was best known as the long-time guitarist for Etta James. Bobby was a Detroit Blues Society Lifetime Achievement Award winner and great friend to the DBS.”
Murray played in the backing band for iconic singer Etta James for 23 years.
Murray played on James’ “Let’s Roll” and “Blues to the Bone,” which won Grammy Awards. He also played on B.B. King’s Grammy Award-winning album “Blues Summit.”
Murray also released five albums.
The first of those albums, “The Blues is Now,” came in 1996, and the last, “Love Letters From Detroit,” was released in 2021.
“Just arrived in Australia and received the sad news of the passing of Bobby Murray,” Tower of Power bandleader Emilio Castillo shared on Facebook. “Bobby was a ‘one of a kind’ type of guy. Very soulful, excellent blues artist, played and was close friends with Roccok. He was from my hometown of Detroit, MI and his work with Etta James for years on the road was phenomenal!!! RIP Bobby!!!”
