Queen Camilla was gifted a Tiffany & Co. brooch by Melania Trump, but she stopped wearing the present after leaving the White House.
Camilla, 78, was seen wearing the brooch as she joined her husband King Charles on a state visit to the U.S. last week. The pair were greeted at the White House by the first lady and her husband Donald Trump.
As Charles and Camilla said goodbye to the Trumps, Camilla was seen wearing the vintage brooch, which featured a diamond floral setting surrounded by rubies. While Camilla wore the brooch, which is believed to be worth around $40,700, when saying goodbye to the Trumps, she swapped it for a Cartier piece for her visit to Arlington National Cemetery. The item featured both the Union Jack and the American flag. It was the same jewel worn by Camilla when she arrived at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland. It comes after Melania broke royal protocol as viewers spotted an inappropriate detail in her gown.
The brooch was given to the late Queen Elizabeth II in 1957 by Robert F. Wagner Jr., former Mayor of New York. It’s since been passed on to Camilla.
It is customary for the royals to swap gifts during a state visit. The Tiffany & Co. brooch was gifted to Camilla by Melania during her and the president’s state visit to the UK last September.
In return, Camilla gave Melania a handbag by Anya Hindmarch and a silver and enamel bowl made by artist Cara Murphy.
During Charles and Camilla’s state visit last week, the royals gave a gift to the Trumps, with Charles gifting the president the bell from a World War II-era British submarine dubbed HMS Trump.
Charles gave the present suring a state dinner at the White House and said, “May it stand as a testimony to our nations’ shared history and shining future.”
Charles described the bell as his “personal gift.” The item featured the president’s name and 1944, which was the year the submarine left a UK shipyard.
The king said the bell was part of a submarine which played “a critical role during the war in the Pacific.”
During a special toast at the White House state dinner, Charles described the history of Britain and America as “reconciliation, from adversaries to the closest of allies, not always perhaps following the straightest path.”
Referencing the gift, he joked, “And should you ever need to get hold of us, well, just give us a ring.”
Charles continued, “Our people have fought and fallen together in defense of the values we cherish across the ocean and from coast to coast. We have stood together through the best and worst of times,” he added, noting the “challenges we now face from those who wish us harm across the world.”
