Born on May 3, 2001, the New Jersey native was just a high school student posting singing videos on YouTube before she beat out tens of thousands of hopefuls for a career-making Steven Spielberg film.

In the few short years since that breathtaking debut, Zegler has navigated blockbuster superhero franchises, dystopian survival games, and highly anticipated Disney live-action remakes. She has also successfully dominated the stage, returning to her theater roots to earn the highest accolades in the industry. To celebrate her 25th birthday this week, here is a definitive look at the five roles that cemented Rachel Zegler as one of young Hollywood’s most formidable talents.

María in West Side Story (2021)

Zegler’s feature film debut was nothing short of legendary. Plucked from obscurity after submitting a self-tape via social media, she stepped into the monumental shoes of María in Steven Spielberg’s vibrant, critically acclaimed reimagining of the classic musical. Zegler brought a stunning, crystal-clear soprano voice and a fierce, updated agency to the tragic heroine. Her flawless performance didn’t just silence any skeptics; it earned her the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, instantly cementing her status as an A-list breakout star.

Lucy Gray Baird in The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes (2023)

Following up a Spielberg debut is an intimidating task, but Zegler proved she was more than capable by anchoring the highly anticipated Hunger Games prequel. Playing the defiant, folksy District 12 tribute Lucy Gray Baird, she traded classic Broadway belting for a gritty, Appalachian-inspired twang. Zegler performed all of her character’s musical numbers live on set, bringing a mesmerizing, theatrical charisma to the deadly arena. It was a darker, more ambiguous role that proved she could easily carry a massive, global sci-fi franchise.

Anthea in Shazam! Fury of the Gods (2023)

Joining the DC Extended Universe, Zegler stepped into her very first superhero blockbuster as Anthea, one of the three Daughters of Atlas. Acting alongside industry titans like Helen Mirren and Lucy Liu, she brought a grounded, deeply empathetic energy to a character torn between her family’s apocalyptic vengeance and her own moral compass. Her sweet, surprisingly normal high school romance with Freddy Freeman (Jack Dylan Grazer) provided the emotional, human anchor amidst the chaotic CGI monster battles and magical lightning strikes.

Snow White in Snow White (2025)

Taking on the role that essentially launched the Walt Disney Company, Zegler starred as the titular princess in the highly anticipated live-action adaptation of the 1937 animated classic. Stepping into the iconic yellow-and-blue dress, she faced off against Gal Gadot’s terrifying Evil Queen. Zegler utilized her world-class vocal chops to breathe fresh, modern life into legendary songs like “Someday My Prince Will Come.” Despite heavy internet scrutiny leading up to its release, her earnest, soaring performance proved she was perfectly cast to bring the original Disney princess into the 21st century.

Eva Perón in Evita (2025)

While her film career has been spectacular, Zegler never forgot her theater roots. In the summer of 2025, she made a triumphant West End debut at the London Palladium, taking on the demanding role of Eva Perón in a major revival of Evita. Tackling Andrew Lloyd Webber’s notoriously difficult score, Zegler completely commanded the stage. Her powerhouse rendition of “Don’t Cry for Me Argentina” earned universal critical acclaim and culminated in her winning the prestigious Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actress in a Musical earlier this year.
