Jon Schaffer, founding guitarist of Iced Earth, has confirmed that he intends to release new material in the future. His return comes after career uncertainties and the band’s hiatus following his arrest for involvement in the invasion of the United States Capitol on January 6, 2021.

“There will be new music. There’s no doubt about that. But it will happen in my time. Because, as much as I listen, and I know the fans, especially Iced Earth fans, want new music, I’m not interested in new music, I want excellent music. And anything that isn’t truly inspired doesn’t interest me. Getting the band back together just to try and feel relevant or make money is the easy way out. It’s a masterstroke. I’m not interested in that. It has to be because I truly love it, not because the machine depends on it. And I was involved in that,” Jon revealed.
He continued: “I think we made great records. I’m proud of my career. […] I’m not going to chase easy money instead of sacrificing my integrity as an artist, and that’s it. For me, I’ve always been the type who doesn’t care much about what people think of my art. I prefer that they like it—that’s my preference—but if you start worrying about what others think, you’ve already lost your way. Art isn’t that, man. It’s something very personal, very spiritual.”.
The musician also criticized AI: “And all this AI nonsense… There’s not the slightest chance that it will be used in Iced Earth or anything else I’m involved in. I have plans and I’m working to put them into practice, but I’m not going to say much more than that. Stay tuned. It will take time. But it will be worth it, believe me.”.
Remember the invasion of the Capitol?
The invasion of the United States Capitol occurred on January 6, 2021, when supporters of then-President Donald Trump stormed the Capitol building in Washington, D.C. This attack took place while Congress was certifying Joe Biden in the 2020 presidential election. The goal of the protesters, incited by speeches alleging electoral fraud, was to disrupt the certification process.
The act resulted in the destruction of part of the building and the temporary suspension of the legislative session. There were clashes between invaders and security forces, resulting in several arrests and, tragically, five deaths. Jon Schaffer became one of the 1,500 people charged in the invasion who were pardoned by President Donald Trump.
