New Music Friday: 30 Hip-Hop, R&B Releases You Need On Your Playlist

This week, we’ve added 10 new tracks to our New Music Discoveries playlist on Apple Music and Spotify, including one track we were lucky enough to premiere earlier in the week. Our Track of the Week is “Karaoke Bar”, the warm and wistful new single from sibling duo Angus & Julia Stone.

The track marks the pair’s first new original music since their 2024 single ‘The Christmas Song’, and follows the release of their 2024 album Cape Forestier.” Built around glowing imagery of lipstick marks on cigarettes, stories written on bathroom stalls and strangers briefly becoming old friends, “Karaoke Bar” captures the communal joy and vulnerability that can emerge in those fleeting moments when a room full of people sing together. Written on the Greek island of Hydra, a stone’s throw from Leonard Cohen’s former home, the track feels beautifully loose and human, with Angus & Julia Stone embracing spontaneity, warmth and nostalgia while retaining the dreamy intimacy that has defined their music for nearly two decades. You have to check out the video as well – it has an enduring and enviable sense of freedom and lightness to it.

total tommy returns with her first new music in a year, and “Pretty Little Mouth” feels like a sharp, confident step into a new era. Co-produced with Tom Stafford (Joy Crookes, Orla Gartland, Jelani Blackman) in London, the track balances biting lyricism with a cool, deadpan charm, capturing the dizzying rush of falling hard and fast before being unceremoniously spat back out again. It’s a gnarly, slick and just a little bit dark. It’s a compelling return from total tommy.

“Chalk” is the latest single to be released from Antony Szmierek’s forthcoming new album Decoding Birdsong (Out August 21st via Mushroom Music). Taking unlikely inspiration from a Ronnie O’Sullivan snooker documentary, “Chalk” is blast of energetic house music that explores the unpredictability of the music industry and how much luck (or lack thereof) can play a part in a music career. The interplay between Szmierek’s lyricism and the jittering and fluttering of the instrumentation make for a compelling listen.

“Westgarth” is one half of the debut double single from Melbourne singer-songwriter Margo Mann. There’s a delightful theatricality and manneredness to “Westgarth”, with the piano and Mann’s gorgeous vocal combining to great effect. Lyrically, Mann shows herself to be adept at weaving vulnerability and intimacy into her work, in this case musing on how scary it can be falling in love and feeling you’re losing yourself in the process.

Adelaide pop-punk duo Teenage Joans return swinging on “Coming Up From Hell”, a fast, punchy blast of catharsis that sees the pair pushing into heavier territory without losing the infectious energy that has made them such a force over the past few years. Packed with razor-sharp riffs, huge hooks and plenty of attitude, the track feels designed to explode in a live setting. We caught them last weekend at Liverpool Sound City, and they were in blistering form.

“Loved By You” is the focus track from Souvenir, the new album from Naarm-based singer-songwriter Ruby Jones. The single is all about the desire to put as much distance as possible between yourself and a painful moment in time. From quite understated beginnings, the track builds into this beautiful emotive piece; that’s full of warmth and quietly powerful. Jones’ vocal in particular really sells the emotion of the track.

Sydney indie favourites The Rions continue their huge run of momentum with “How To Breathe”, a richly cinematic collaboration with Matt Corby released alongside the deluxe edition of their acclaimed debut album Everything Every Single Day. The track feels expansive and deeply emotive, with Noah Blockley and Corby’s voices blending with striking natural chemistry. “How to Breathe” feels insightful, wise and has a great warmth to it. There is an extra sprinkle of magic, knowing that The Rions grew up covering Matt Corby songs before eventually finding themselves writing alongside one of their biggest inspirations. With UK and European headline dates kicking off this month, The Rions continue to prove they’re one of Australia’s most compelling young indie acts. Head HERE for all the dates.

We’ve also added “28” from Sydney-based singer-songwriter Daphnie, and “Front Row” from BROCKHOFF. Rounding out the additions is “Turn on the Lights” from Kim Yang 楊予菁 which we premiered earlier in the week.
