Ever since Charli XCX teased that she’s going to be “making rock music,” all sorts of theories regarding the pop star’s musical direction started to appear. That caused so much confusion that the artist had to clarify some things on Instagram herself, stating that she never explicitly said she “was making a rock album.”

However, it all makes sense now, as Charli XCX has released a brand new track called ‘Rock Music,’ alongside a video directed by Aidan Zamiri.

Charli XCX Combines The Ashes Of The Dance Floor With Rock Music

Singing “I think the dance floor is dead” on her new song ‘Rock Music,’ Charli XCX stays true to her dance-punk and hyperpop ways, combining it with heavy guitars to ensure that the track lives up to its name. The artist recruits Scottish director Aidan Zamiri for the music video, who also directed visuals for the Billie Eilish remix of ‘Guess.’

The two-minute music video features Charli XCX walking around, smoking cigarettes, dancing on a dance floor despite declaring it dead, and performing the song with a band consisting of George Daniel on the drums and producers A G Cook and Finn Keane (previously known as Easyfun) on bass and guitar, respectively.

‘Rock Music‘ will serve as the lead single for Charli XCX’s upcoming Brat follow-up album, although the exact title and release date of the project have still not been revealed. While it remains to be seen where ‘Rock Music‘ will be placed on the album’s track listing, there are speculations that the song will likely be the one that kicks off the project, ending abruptly and setting the stage for what’s to come.

For the past few months, Charli XCX has been more focused towards the cinematic side of things, including releasing the soundtrack album for Wuthering Heights and starring in films such as Faces of Death and The Moment. But it appears that she has entered her new musical era with ‘Rock Music.’
