Meghan Markle is reportedly desperate to reclaim her short-lived title as a princess following a string of failed business ventures.
The Duchess of Sussex has kept busy since she and Prince Harry stepped back as senior members of the royal family in 2020.
After a series of unsuccessful business ventures, the former Hollywood actress reportedly wants her royal status restored, according to a royal source.
English broadcaster Mark Dolan said Meghan has realised her personal brand is failing to resonate with people and is now knocking on royal doors, begging to be let back in.
“It’s my understanding that Meghan has realised that her solo projects aren’t working and that Meghan as this amazing independent brand is not successful,” Dolan said.
Although Markle’s As Ever brand has reportedly been “selling-out”, PR and branding specialist Renae Smith told Yahoo! that it doesn’t guarantee future success.
“Right now, it still feels reactive rather than disciplined,” the expert noted.
The former Suits actress’s Netflix lifestyle series With Love, Meghan, also fell short of a major success, and failed to be renewed for a third season, with a source telling journalist Paula Froelich the show struggled to connect with viewers.
Dolan said the mother-of-two is eagle-eyed on a reconciliation with King Charles and wishes to reclaim the status she walked away from years ago.
“My royal insiders are telling me that she’s all out now to get back to the UK to reconnect with King Charles and to effectively be Princess Meghan again,” he said.
Dolan said the couple’s recent tour of Australia was their latest bid to prove that if they became working members of the royal family again, they were more than ready for the task.
“That’s what Australia was about – dipping their toe back in that water.”
The couple’s Australia trip mirrored a royal tour in many ways – except for one glaring difference.
While it followed the structure of royal tours of the past, the philanthropic ventures, public appearances, and official engagements were criticised by some as money-grabbing opportunities.
The strategy was reportedly frowned upon by heir to the throne Prince William, further damaging the couple’s chances of returning as official working members of the family.
Royal biographer Tom Bower claimed Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s titles could be revised or even stripped once Prince William becomes king, creating another obstacle should Meghan seek to reclaim royal status.
“Exploiting their royal status to earn money is making them intolerable for the palace,” Bower said.
“When William is king, I think he will strip them of their titles, because it’s hugely damaging to the royal family,” Bower said.
