According to Deadline, Michael has been a hit in a number of countries outside the U.S., including the U.K., Spain, the Netherlands, Germany, Australia, Brazil and France, where it took the no. 1 spot with $7.2 million over the weekend.
Over three years after it was first announced, the film premiered in theaters on April 24. Michael stars Jaafar Jackson, the son of the King of Pop’s brother, Jermaine Jackson, in the titular role.
Playing a young Michael is Juliano Krue Valdi, while Colman Domingo portrays patriarch Joe Jackson, who managed Michael and his brothers in the Jackson 5, and daughters Rebbie Jackson, La Toya Jackson and Janet Jackson.
The film has taken a number of other box office records already, including the best box office start of all time for a biopic after it netted $97 million domestically and $217 million abroad in its first weekend, totaling an impressive $314 million worldwide, per Variety. 2015’s Straight Outta Compton previously held the record with $60 million.
Michael‘s box office success also marked the second-biggest debut of 2026 so far, as The Super Mario Galaxy Movieraked in $131 million earlier this year.

“Highlighting both his life off-stage and some of the most iconic performances from his early solo career, the film gives audiences a front-row seat to Michael Jackson as never before,” the film’s synopsis reads.
An early logline for the film said that it would bring an “honest portrayal of the brilliant yet complicated” singer, whose final years before his death were met with controversy. The film ends in 1988, leaving out any of the child sex abuse allegations made against him in the years to follow.
The Antoine Fuqua-directed and John Logan-written biopic was developed with the blessing of many of the late Michael’s family members after he died in 2009 at age 50.
It also stars Nia Long as Jackson matriarch Katherine Jackson, Miles Teller as lawyer-manager John Branca, Laura Harrier as producer Suzanne de Passe and Mike Myers as CBS Records exec Walter Yetnikoff.
Michael is in theaters now.
