After years of dominating group chats, Twitter feeds, and morning routines, Wordle is officially heading to network television.

Savannah Guthrie announced Monday that she’ll host NBC’s upcoming Wordle game show, which has reportedly been in development alongside Jimmy Fallon and The New York Times for over two years. The series will see contestants competing for money in a fast-paced version of the viral word game that became a full-on internet phenomenon during the pandemic.

Although it might seem like an unusual concept, the move makes a lot of sense.

For years, television networks have been trying to figure out how to compete with internet culture instead of getting left behind by it. But lately, the strategy seems less about creating entirely new franchises and more about bringing already-successful online obsessions into mainstream entertainment.

Wordle already had the kind of built-in audience most TV executives dream about. People didn’t just play it; they made it part of their daily routine. Every morning became its own mini social event, with timelines and group chats filled with those instantly recognizable green, yellow, and gray boxes.

That kind of audience loyalty is hard to manufacture.

What makes Wordle especially interesting as a TV concept is that it already feels interactive. Even people who weren’t actively playing often followed along online or tried to solve friends’ puzzles themselves. Turning that into a family-friendly competition series is a natural next step.

The announcement also reflects a bigger shift happening across entertainment right now. Internet culture is no longer existing separately from traditional media; it’s becoming the foundation for it.

We’ve already seen social media stars move into mainstream Hollywood, podcasts turn into television series, and TikTok trends reshape the music industry almost overnight. Now, even simple browser games are becoming primetime programming.

And NBC bringing in Guthrie as host feels intentional too. She already has the approachable, everyday energy that made Wordle resonate with so many people in the first place. During the announcement, Fallon even joked that they wanted someone who “looks like they play Wordle.”

More importantly, the Today co-anchor already has a genuine connection to the game. Guthrie has publicly shared her love for Wordle for years, even once solving a massive version of the puzzle in Times Square in 2025.

The upcoming series also arrives at a time when audiences seem increasingly drawn to comfort entertainment: familiar, low-stakes shows people can enjoy together instead of overly complicated prestige television.

That may ultimately be why Wordle works.

At its core, it was never just a game. It was a shared internet ritual. And now NBC is betting that same daily obsession can work on television too.
