Sally Field has shared a lifetime of memories with her children, including bringing her youngest, Sam Greisman, on some legendary sets.
While reflecting on her 1989 classic Steel Magnolias, the Remarkably Bright Creatures actress, 79, shared Greisman’s favorite joke about the Southern film’s impact on his sexuality.
Shortly after the birth of Sam, now 38 (from her second marriage to Alan Greisman), Field shot 1989’s Steel Magnolias alongside Shirley MacLaine, Dolly Parton, Julia Roberts and Olympia Dukakis. “Sam was on the set all the time and my friends took care of him,” she told PEOPLE of her costars, noting that on the weekends, the group would shop together and play “silly” games. “We all just rolled him around, and Dolly [wiggling] her fingernails [at him].”

Field went on to describe a photo she has “hanging in my little office” in which she, MacLaine, Roberts and Parton are looking past the camera and smiling at the movie’s wrap party. “On my chest is my little son Sam … I’m holding his head because I’m trying to save his ears because it was loud,” she says, adding with a laugh: “Sam has always said that that’s probably why he’s gay.”

Field is also a mother to two sons, Peter, 56, and Eli, 53, whom she shares with her first husband, Steven Craig. “They are my support system, but I am theirs as well,” says Field, who is also a grandmother of five.
Greisman, who is a writer, has often spoken about his close bond with his mother, writing in a 2023 personal essay for PEOPLE that he’s “always been a momma’s boy.”

He reflected on how he could trace his life through her career, recalling how he “built model airplanes and hung them all over our rented house in San Francisco” while she shot Mrs. Doubtfire and how he was rewarded with a new toy if he didn’t use his pacifier through the night while she was filming Forrest Gump in South Carolina.
Years earlier, while presenting Field with the Americans for the Equality Act’s Ally for Equality Award, Greisman said his mom “couldn’t be more supportive” of him.
“When I came out, she didn’t even bat an eye. In fact, she was overjoyed,” he shared from the podium. “Being gay was just one more thing she loved about me.”
