There aren’t many places where asking a celebrity about their cartoon crush feels like a totally reasonable use of time, but at the Disney Upfronts in New York City on Tuesday, it somehow just worked. Maybe it’s the proximity to all things animated, or maybe it’s the fact that everyone immediately taps into their childhood without overthinking it.
The answers? Exactly as random and delightful as you’d hope. There were the expected picks — Jasmine, Ariel, Belle, Prince Eric — alongside a strong showing for Mulan (less “crush,” more “icon”). And then, of course, the wild cards: Goofy (twice!), Minnie Mouse and at least one hard opt-out from the entire concept.
If nothing else, it made for a fun red carpet question: quick, nostalgic and just weird enough to get people out of autopilot. (Even if it means admitting, on the record, that Tarzan “could really get it.”)
Bruno Tonioli (Dancing With the Stars)
“My crush actually is the evil witch, Maleficent. She’s misunderstood. And I love Angelina Jolie’s version as well.”
Robert Irwin (The Next Pro)
“You know who I always thought was an absolute boss and, like, she is so dang cool? Mulan. That scene when she puts the gear on and she gets the sword? I’m like, You are killing the game. She is so cool.”
Jessica Capshaw (9-1-1 Nashville)
“Flynn Rider, from Tangled.”
Derek Hough (Dancing With the Stars)
“Jasmine.”

Ryan Phillippe (9-1-1 Nashville)
“I don’t have one. I’m not attracted to cartoons. Jessica Rabbit? I don’t know.”
Stassi Schroeder (House of Stassi)
“Tarzan? [Prince Eric] is a little too coiffed for me. I don’t know, I feel like Tarzan could really get it. King Triton, once I’m older.”

Stassi Schroeder’s pick: Tarzan.

Kylie Cantrall (Descendants: Wicked Wonderland)
“I’ve gotta go Prince Eric. Don’t ask me why I answered that so quickly.”
Liamani Segura (Descendants: Wicked Wonderland)
“Prince Naveen.”
Malia Baker (Descendants: Wicked Wonderland)
“Prince Naveen! He’s a cutie.”
Mark Ballas (Dancing With the Stars)
“Ariel.”

The Little Mermaid‘s Ariel got Mark Ballas’s vote.

Chris O’Donnell (9-1-1 Nashville)
“One of the princesses. I think Belle. Have you seen that SNL skit where they pretend they’re the Real Housewives? It’s the funniest thing you’ve ever seen.”
Saagar Shaikh (Deli Boys)
“It’s Jasmine. It’s always been Jasmine.”
Poorna Jagannathan (Deli Boys)
“Minnie Mouse.”
Asif Ali (Deli Boys)
“This is a trap. Mine’s Goofy. What’s up, dude.”

An unexpected choice: Goofy.

Gabourey Sidibe (American Horror Story)
“We don’t have crushes on cartoons.”
Billie Lourd (American Horror Story)
“Bluey.”
McKinley Freeman (Reasonable Doubt)
“Definitely Mulan.”

Mulan is an “absolute boss,” according to Robert Irwin.
