The Sims 4 Music Den Kit Review: Rocking Retro-Futurism

We’ve added a further ten tracks to our Discovery playlist on Apple Music and Spotify. This week the award-winning West Australian singer-songwriter Finn Pearson takes out our Track of the Week with his new single “Tunnel Lights”.

“Tunnel Lights” is a track which sees Pearson leaning further into the alt-country rock territory he’s been flirting with on previous releases; without losing any of intimacy and emotional authenticity that is a trademark of his songwriting. The song, which has been a few years in the making, explores the disintegration of a relationship and its aftermath – prime country rock material, really.

Musically it’s quite interesting, with almost a dreamy undercurrent interspersed with these grittier moments – there’s some gorgeous atmospheric slide guitar work on this one too, which really accentuates the song’s emotional core alongside Pearson’s adept lyricism. West Australian audiences can catch him at shows across the South West and Perth through the rest of the month. For more information and to get tickets head HERE.

Georgie Winchester is an AU favourite, and for good reason: she’s a lovely, instinctive songwriter with a knack for making vulnerability feel loud, lived-in and immediate. Her new single, “Crying In Private,” leans into that gift with pure rock & roll energy, turning the refrain “I don’t wanna be crying in private, let me cry in public” into a loud, liberating rock anthem for anyone tired of hiding their emotions. It was recorded at Dashville Bush Studios and backed by Dashville Community Records, the home of the brilliant Gum Ball amongst other events in the Hunter Valley. The track is the first taste from her forthcoming album Dust & Salt, due in November.

“Let This Be” is the latest release from Boorloo’s People Taking Pictures – a boundary pushing project from Psychedelic Porn Crumpets’ Luke Parrish, MC POW! Negro from Superego and Myriad Sun. The single serves as the first taste of the band’s upcoming EP SOOP (Out June 11th). Urgent, chaotic and pushing with blistering raw energy “Let It Be” is a captivating blend of psychedelic rock, jazz fusion, hip hop and electronica. You can catch them on the road in June and July, with more details to follow.

Feminist feral theatre-punks Twat Union are back with “Period Sex”, a gloriously chaotic garage-punk anthem that’s already become a fan favourite in their riotous live sets. Equal parts hilarious, confrontational and cathartic, the track tackles menstruation, embarrassment and dating anxiety head-on, with vocalist Kate Mac describing it as both “a true story” and a push against the lingering taboo around period sex. The single arrives alongside a tongue-in-cheek whodunit-style video, while the band heads to The Great Escape this week for two showcase appearances before a packed UK summer festival run. We can’t wait to see them live in Brighton.

Also added to the playlist this week is “Wait”, the new single from Canadian teen rock band Thunder Queens. With GRAMMY Award-winning producer Dave Schiffman at the helm “Wait” sees the young trio channeling the sound and spirit of the golden era of Canada’s East Coast indie rock scene. Scrappy, filled with thick guitar riffs, there’s a wonderful dynamism and energy to “Wait”, with everything delivered at breakneck pace and intensity in complete contradiction to the song title.

Go-Jo is leaning hard into feel-good pop chaos on “Sweat”, a super-catchy dance anthem packed with massive hooks, bright production, and enough energy to soundtrack an entire summer. Featuring guest vocals from Amy and George Sheppard, the track bursts with charisma from the opening beat and feels tailor-made for festival crowds and late-night dancefloors alike. It’s utterly irresistible.

This week we also have “Avon Valley”, the latest release from West Australia’s answer to CSNY, folk rockers The Bures Band. Fresh from a successful international run which included appearances on KEXP and SXSW, the WA five piece are preparing for the release of their forthcoming album Ozonia, with more ‘kraut-rock’ inspired jams filled with jangling guitars, rich harmonies and even the occasional bit of flute. There’s a real warmth and familiarity to “Avon Valley” that just makes for an enjoyable time.

Finally, also added to the playlist is an exploration of relationship changes through the lens of seasonal change from Australian singer-songwriter Dingo (“Autumn”) and “Gorge” off Scouch the debut album from Melbourne’s Cycad, which we premiered the video for earlier this week.
