Hudson Valley Shakespeare on Thursday cut the ribbon on its new Samuel H. Scripps Theater Center, opening the facility in Garrison following completion of a six-year project.

The nearly 15,000-square-foot venue is the company’s first ever permanent home and theater. Its first season of shows begins on June 10.

“The opening of the Samuel H. Scripps Theater Center recognizes the important role that arts and culture organizations play in strengthening communities, welcoming visitors, supporting local economies, and stewarding shared public spaces,” said Kendra Ekelund, managing director of Hudson Valley Shakespeare.

“The Samuel H. Scripps Theater Center was made possible by two extraordinary acts of generosity: Christopher Davis’s vision in conveying this 98-acre landscape to HVS, and Wendy Scripps’s lead philanthropic support, naming this theater in honor of her father, Samuel H. Scripps,” said Davis McCallum, artistic director.

The $33 million project includes a LEED certified theater and ecological land restoration, according to Gov. Kathy Hochul, who also announced the opening of the center on Thursday. She said the project was supported by a combined $15.25 million in state funding.
