Garage-rock icon Jon Spencer has unveiled “Orange Slice Blues,” a new single and accompanying video from his upcoming album Songs of Personal Loss and Protest, due out June 12th via Shove Records. Alongside the release, Spencer has also announced a fresh slate of North American tour dates set for this fall.

The new record sees Spencer joined by drummer Macky “Spider” Bowman and bassist Kendall Wind, delivering what the veteran songwriter describes as “New New Super Heavy Rock for Hard Times.” Fueled by fuzzed-out basslines, explosive rhythms, and Spencer’s unmistakable vocal intensity, the album continues the boundary-pushing energy that has defined his career for more than four decades.

Songs of Personal Loss and Protest arrives June 12th through Shove Records.

Spencer comments:

“I’m in a time of spiritual reckoning. These past few years, there has been a lot of emotional conflict and personal loss — the passing of time takes its toll. Losing friends, losing family, and all of this set against a world gone topsy turvy, where it feels like we are losing basic freedoms… I’m trying to balance a lot of things, but the answer is always rock n’ roll.”

The album was recorded at Applehead Recording in Woodstock, New York, with additional sessions tracked in Santiago, Chile. Chris Bittner handled recording and mixing duties, while Dave Gardner mastered the release.

Over the course of his career, Jon Spencer has remained one of independent music’s most influential and unpredictable figures. Best known for his work with Pussy Galore, The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Heavy Trash, Boss Hog, and Jon Spencer & the HITmakers, Spencer has collaborated with artists ranging from Beastie Boys and Beck to Steve Albini, DJ Shadow, Chuck D, and Nancy Sinatra.

His production credits include work with Cheater Slicks, The Bobby Lees, Experimental Tropic Blues Band, and the Grammy-nominated Death Wish Blues by Samantha Fish & Jesse Dayton.

Following a run of UK and European shows this summer, Spencer will return to North America in September and November.
