Nicole Richie and Her Daughter Kate Twin in a New Hair Trend

Nicole Richie and her daughter Kate Madden just took on the latest hair trend at the premiere of “Stop! That! Train!” in Los Angeles on Monday night, pairing pin-straight ends with moody eye makeup.

The 44-year-old fashion designer tucked the top of her bleach blond color under a polka-dot head scarf, while her 18-year-old, whom she shares with her husband Joel Madden, added inky, foot-long extensions to her head for an exaggerated aesthetic.

Madden more accurately resembled the most recent hair trend that emerged out of the 2026 Met Gala earlier in May: straight extensions. Honoring this year’s dress code, “Fashion Is Art,” a slew of stars donned extra-long, flat-ironed ends on the red carpet, with Nicole Kidman and her daughter Sunday Rose two of the earlier trendsetters that night. Other attendees who similarily doubled down on the drama included Amanda Seyfried, Katy Perry, Rosé and Lisa.

Indeed, Richie opted for a shortened version of the burgenoning fad, keeping her ends above trimmed above her chest. The sleek look was already a far cry from “The Simple Life” star’s signature aesthetic, which has famously rotated between wavy, kinked and crimped texture.

That said, Richie isn’t afraid to switch things up. In March, she debuted a statement-making transformation in tandem with the release of her new campaign with Eucerin. The short-form video saw richie promote the drugstore brand’s Radiant Tone collection with a slick-back bun and a freshly trimmed bob.

Though Madden’s extension type has yet to be confirmed, the wider beauty world has been buzzing about K-tips, otherwise known as Keratin tips. Unlike clip- and tape-ins, these are pre-bonded strands that use partial keratin — a protein already found in the hair — as an adhesive. The tips are installed using a low heat clamp and typically anywhere between three and six months.
