Key Points

  • Scott Foley addressed the Will Trent cast and crew after his character’s devastating exit in the season 4 finale.

  • The actor called his time on the ABC show a “wonderful experience” in a post showing him holding up a framed photo of his name in its opening credits.

  • Foley’s Dr. Seth met his end just three episodes after the show bid farewell to another beloved character, Sonja Sohn’s Amanda Wagner.

Scott Foley may have bid farewell to his Will Trent character, Dr. Seth McDale, in the most devastating way, but at least he has something sweet to remind him of his time on the ABC drama.

The actor gave fans a look at the special memento he got after his departure from the series in an Instagram post on Tuesday. In it, Foley can be seen holding up a photo of his name in its opening credits, which also feature the show’s biggest star: Bluebell the Chihuahua, who plays the titular character’s beloved companion Betty.

“What a wonderful gift to receive after a wonderful experience on #willtrent,” Foley captioned the post. “Thanks to the cast and crew, the writers and creators who made the experience so special. This will surely make my wife and daughter say “awww” each time they pass by, and really that’s enough for me.”

Foley’s Dr. Seth met his fate in the show’s season 4 finale episode, just three episodes after it bid farewell to one of its most beloved characters, Sonja Sohn’s Amanda Wagner.

The May 5 episode saw Dr. Seth die suddenly from injuries sustained in a car accident. As if that weren’t sad enough, Seth’s death coincided with his partner, Angie (Erika Christensen), giving birth to their daughter. In a devastating sequence, Angie had just gone into labor and the couple were on their way to the hospital when another driver crashed into them. Seth initially appeared safe, helping Angie and the other driver, but at the hospital, after Angie was whisked away to deliver their child, he discovered massive bruising on his ribs that indicated internal bleeding.

Though Angie delivered a healthy baby girl named Edie, Seth didn’t make it. Motivated by Angie’s devastation, Will (Ramón Rodrìguez) stepped up to help, which gave him direction amid his own grief over Amanda’s death. He even echoed his late mother figure’s words to him as he introduced himself to Edie as “Uncle Will,” assuring her that he’s ready to “be of service.”

He then delivered a solemn promise. “Here’s the contract. I will be here, slightly terrified. I’m probably going to mess up some, but I will make sure you are okay,” he told Edie. “I’ll make sure that you feel safe and loved. I’ll be like your Betty, just less demanding. Deal?”

Later, a montage revealed how seriously Will takes his vow. After he goes on a leave absence from the GBI, we watch as he, Edie, and Angie forge a sort of family unit, bolstered by the support of Nico (Cora Lu Tran) and Betty. After several months pass, Will and Angie finally return to work to discover big changes, including a new deputy director on the way.

The intense losses usher in what showrunners Liz Heldens, Daniel T. Thomsen, and Karine Rosenthal recently told TV Insider is a bit of a refresh for the series. “Going into season 5, it just really felt like we needed a reset and some new energy and some new dynamics,” Heldens explained. “These were really hard and emotional decisions for the writers. There was a lot of back-and-forth in the room, but eventually we did what we thought was best for the future of the show.”

While Will Trent hasn’t offered an official synopsis for season 5 yet, fans got a taste of what to expect in the last moments of the season 4 finale. As Will and Angie return to the GBI and APD, respectively, Faith Mitchell (Iantha Richardson) and APD detectives Ormewood (Jake McLaughlin) and Franklin (Kevin Daniels) reveal that they’ve been hard at work investigating a sex-trafficking ring that may or may not have ties to some very powerful figures. Will and Ormewood will now work together as partners, while Faith and Angie will also pair up.

Thomsen said the trafficking case allows for a story about how “power corrupts,” but added, “We’ve got these good guys who aren’t going to let that hold them back.”

Fans will have to wait until the show returns to ABC in January or February of 2027 to see just how much things have changed for Will & Co.
