When Jonathan Young competed on the 42nd season of “Survivor” a few years ago, the former college swimmer and Gulf Coast resident missed out on being a part of the final three left standing when he failed at the fire-making challenge.
That wasn’t the case the second time around when Young outlasted more than a dozen other former players in “Survivor 50: In the Hands of Fans” to earn a spot at the final Tribal Council, where a jury of contestants he helped send home would vote to decide if he should win the $2 million pot. Young had to make fire again, and this time he beat Rizo Velovic to clinch his spot in the final three.
Young, 33, had quite an evolution this season. Known for his physicality and dominance in challenges, the beach lover focused more on connections and gameplay during “Survivor 50” and outlasted fan-favorite players including Cirie Fields, Ozzy Lusth, Tiffany Ervin and Mike White of “White Lotus” fame.
In the end, his pitch to the jury wasn’t enough to be named Sole Survivor on Wednesday. Young and fellow finalist Joe Hunter lost to Aubry Bracco, who won 5-3-0. Young got three votes, and Hunter did not receive any votes from the jury.
Young, known for his long blonde hair, chiseled body and six-pack abs, owns a beach rental business in Gulf Shores, he told the Montgomery Advertiser, and said it has helped him train for the show.
