Early on Tuesday, May 19, Meghan shared 24 previously unseen photos of her and Harry’s special day on her Instagram account. A few hours later, the Duchess posted several new videos from the family celebrations in Montecito, California. It was widely criticised, with some describing the move as “cringe” and “embarrassing”.
Now, a PR expert has pinpointed exactly why the Duchess lost the “strategy” game and where it all went wrong.
Nick Ede, a Brand and Culture expert, told the Daily Express: “The volume of posts was probably where the strategy fell down.
“One heartfelt anniversary tribute would likely have landed far better than a rapid-fire stream of photos and videos.”
He added: “Instead of feeling organic, it started to feel like a deliberate campaign, and that’s why so many people online described it as ‘cringe’ or ‘fake’. “
Mr Eden claimed that the Duchess is operating in a space where her every move is “scrutinised,” saying: “Subtlety is always going to work more effectively for her than saturation.”
It comes after the Duchess delivered a powerful speech in Switzerland last weekend, urging global health leaders to act to keep children safe online, adding that they are being shaped by systems “designed to capture attention at any cost”.
