OSHKOSH, Wis. (WFRV) – Long before he was writing for some of television’s most recognizable comedies, Kristofor Brown was a UW-Oshkosh student figuring out his future.
How an Oshkosh hobby shop etched its name in horror history with ‘Backrooms’ photo
The longtime television writer and producer returned to Oshkosh for Quad Con at Oshkosh Arena, revisiting the city he says helped launch his career in entertainment.
Brown built a career writing and producing for several well-known television shows, including Beavis and Butt-Head, The Tom Green Show and Blue Mountain State.
While many fans know him for helping shape the humor of MTV’s iconic animated series, Brown says his creative inspiration often came from his Wisconsin roots.
“A lot of the earliest Beavis and Butt-Head episodes I wrote were inspired by really stupid things I did growing up in Wisconsin,” Brown said. “You take your life and you make it some of your material.”
Brown graduated from UW-Oshkosh’s radio-TV-film program, where he says a professor helped inspire him to pursue screenwriting professionally.
During his final year, Brown took a television screenwriting course taught by Professor Douglas Hale — a class he says changed the direction of his life.
“That was where I got the idea that I wanted to go on and become a screenwriter,” Brown said.
That path eventually led Brown to Hollywood, where he helped create some of the most memorable moments in animated comedy, including writing the now-famous line, “I need T-P for my bunghole.”
Still, Brown says one of the most rewarding parts of his career is meeting fans and hearing the memories they associate with the show.
He said many share stories of sneaking episodes late at night or getting in trouble for watching Beavis and Butt-Head when parents didn’t approve.
“Well, that’s the reason I do this show,” Brown said. “I love talking to the fans because everybody’s got their own stories about how they started watching Beavis and Butt-Head.”
Brown’s appearance at Quad Con gave fans a chance to meet the Wisconsin native whose work helped shape some of television’s most memorable comedy — while giving Brown a chance to reconnect with the city where his own story first began.
