Culture minister congratulates film director Jin Mi-song on Cannes win

 

Culture Minister Chae Hwi-young has sent a congratulatory message to Korean film director Jin Mi-song for winning Second Prize in the La Cinef section for student films at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, his office said on Saturday.

 

In the message sent on Friday, Chae said that Jin’s “Silent Voices” moved people all over the world with its “quiet but deep resonance” delivered through the everyday lives of an immigrant family.

 


 

“I send a round of applause of encouragement, as your sincere attention and directing ability that delicately captures the various aspects of an individual’s emotions has led to a precious result on the world stage,” he wrote.

 

“Your award demonstrates the potential of the next generation of Korean cinema and will give courage and inspiration to our young people in the film industry,” he added.

 

The La Cinef section is a competition dedicated to works produced by emerging filmmakers attending film schools. This year, 19 student films were chosen out of 2,747 global submissions, according to the organizers.

 

“Silent Voices” follows a day in the life of a family that settled in New York after emigrating to the United States from Korea. The 17-minute film delicately portrays how the parents and their two daughters quietly hide their emotions regarding their different daily struggles.
