Jane Fonda was “genuinely shocked” by the response to remarks she made back in March about Barbra Streisand being asked to pay tribute to the late Robert Redford at the 2026 Oscars instead of her, an insider tells Examiner.

“It’s put her in the doghouse in a lot of well-heeled social circles,” reveals the insider, including in Malibu, where The Way We Were star, 84, reigns as the “undisputed” queen bee.

Not even an attempt to walk back her comments seems to have helped.

“I thought I was being funny,” Fonda, 88, said at the TCM Classic Film Festival opening night screening of Barefoot In The Park in Hollywood on Thursday, April 30, per USA Today. “But actually, I thought it was fabulous that they had Barbra out there.”

“It’s fair to say she underestimated the backlash and now she’s trying to crawl her way out of it,” the insider claims. “But as far as Barbra’s concerned, it’s too little, too late.”

The damage, it appears, has already been done.

Streisand “was very offended when Jane made those catty remarks,” the insider notes. “It touched a major nerve and even now, the apology feels hollow and staged as opposed to anything genuine.”

Following Babs’ tribute to Redford at the Oscars, Fonda famously quipped to Entertainment Tonight, “I wanna know how come Streisand was up there doing that for Redford? She only made one movie with him. I made four. I have more to say.”

As Examiner previously reported, a source says the actresses were “hugely competitive” over Redford, who sadly passed away in 2025 at the age of 89.

“Jane can grovel and try to weasel her way out of this all she wants, but once you’ve crossed Barbra, that’s it,” says the insider. “You’re done.”
