On Yankees ace Gerrit Cole’s personal Opening Night start of 2026
Gerrit Cole tossed six shutout innings in his first start back from Tommy John surgery rehab, during the Yankees’ 4-2 loss to the Rays at the Stadium.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – After their combined three-RBI day in Monday’s win here at Kauffman Stadium, Anthony Volpe is back in the Yankees’ lineup at shortstop and Jose Caballero is on the bench.
Amed Rosario will get the start at third base against the Royals on Tuesday night, but the Volpe-Caballero lineup dynamic is still something to watch going forward.
“If we can both be in the lineup and help the team win, that’s great,’’ said Caballero, following Monday’s 4-3 victory against the Royals. “If one of us can be in the lineup, as long as we win the game, it doesn’t matter who’s out there.’’
Caballero could get an outfield start as early as Wednesday night, per manager Aaron Boone.
Volpe spoke about “doing absolutely everything I can’’ to contribute here, after his rehab stint (left shoulder) extended into a minor league option.
As teammates, “everyone pushes me the same way (and) I hope I push everyone else,’’ Volpe said of pulling in the same direction toward playing at their best and winning.
On Tuesday night, the Yankees are sending Cam Schlittler (6-2, 1.50 ERA) out for his 11th start of the year, while the Royals are going with a bullpen game, with lefty Bailey Falter (0-1, 9.82 ERA) going first.
