Todd and Julie Chrisley were in prison from January 2023 to May 2025 after Donald Trump, also a reality TV star, issued the couple a presidential pardon.

Todd and Julie Chrisley left federal prison after their presidential pardon a year ago.

Since then, the reality TV stars have quickly returned to the small screen with several appearances focused on adjusting to life post-incarceration.

In 2022, the Chrisleys were convicted of bank fraud and tax evasion, turning themselves in to prison in January 2023. Their daughter, “Chrisley Knows Best” co-star Savannah Chrisley, lobbied for her parents’ release. Her plea reached the Oval Office, and on May 28, 2025, President Donald Trump, also a former reality TV star, granted the “According to Chrisley” stars a full pardon.

A day after the Trump pardon, the couple was released from their respective prisons in Florida and Kentucky and returned home to Nashville, Tennessee. In fall 2025, they were back on the air with a new series, “Chrisleys: Back to Reality.”

Below is a timeline of Todd and Julie Chrisley’s journey from reality TV success to prison to their presidential pardon.

2014: ‘Chrisley Knows Best’ premieres on USA Network

2014: Todd and Julie Chrisley portray themselves as real estate tycoons, gaining fame with their USA Network reality show “Chrisley Knows Best.” The docuseries followed their tight-knit, boisterous family and the Chrisleys’ lavish lifestyle in the Atlanta suburbs.

According to Deadline in 2014, the show was a major success for USA Network and saw over 2 million viewers during its season finale.

Season four documented the Chrisleys’ move from Atlanta, Georgia, to Nashville, Tennessee.

2017: ‘According to Chrisley’ on USA Network

2017: Todd Chrisley made headlines after he addressed speculation that he’s gay. “Chrisley Knows Best” was renewed for a sixth season.

USA Network also ordered eight episodes of an aftershow program called “According to Chrisley.” The aftershow followed a late-night talk-show or variety-show format, with Todd Chrisley as host, interviewing celebrities. However, the talk show did not get renewed for a second season.

2018: ‘Growing Up Chrisley’ spinoff on USA Network

2018: During the seventh season of “Chrisley Knows Best,” USA Network announced the spinoff, “Growing Up Chrisley.” That show focused on Chase Chrisley and Savannah Chrisley as they went on a road trip from Nashville to Los Angeles and attempted to break out on their own in the big city.

2019: Julie and Todd Chrisley indicted on tax evasion charges

2019: Todd and Julie Chrisley were indicted on tax evasion charges in Georgia. The 12-count indictment accused Todd and Julie Chrisley of bank fraud and wire fraud conspiracy. Accountant Peter Tarantino was also charged with conspiring and aiding the filing of a false tax return.

Despite the Chrisleys’ legal troubles, “Chrisley Knows Best” continued to air on USA Network.

2022: ‘Chrisley’ shows continue as Todd and Julie are found guilty

2022: “Chrisley Knows Best” was picked up for a 10th season, while “Growing Up Chrisley” was renewed for a fourth. E! also announced the franchise was moving forward with a new dating series, “Love Limo,” hosted by Todd Chrisley, days before the trial was set to begin.

The embattled reality TV stars Julie and Todd Chrisley were found guilty in June 2022 of tax evasion and defrauding community banks of more than $30 million through fraudulent loans that funded their luxurious lifestyle.

All three shows involving the Chrisley family were then canceled.

Julie Chrisley was additionally convicted of obstruction of justice and wire fraud. She was originally set to serve her time in the federal prison camp in Marianna, Florida, about two-and-a-half hours away from Pensacola. For reasons unknown,Julie Chrisley was reassigned from the Florida prison to a federal medical center in Kentucky.

2023: Todd and Julie Chrisley start prison terms

2023: The Chrisleys traded their luxurious lifestyle for prison time, turning themselves in to their respective prisons on Jan. 17, 2023. Julie Chrisley served her prison sentence at the Federal Medical Center in Lexington, Kentucky.

Todd Chrisley started serving time at FPC Pensacola, described on its site as a “minimum security federal prison camp.”

2024: Savannah Chrisley a guest speaker at RNC, lobbies for prison reform

2024: After 18 months, Julie Chrisley‘s prison sentence was thrown out when federal judges ruled her case had insufficient evidence, according to a June 25, 2024, story in USA TODAY. In June 2024, judges from the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals found that the judge in Julie Chrisley’s 2022 trial miscalculated her sentence and did not find evidence proving her full involvement in the bank fraud scheme for which she was sentenced, according to documents obtained by USA TODAY.

The court of appeals upheld the convictions of Chrisley, her husband, Todd Chrisley and their accountant, Peter Tarantino. She was held responsible for the entire fraud scheme, which reportedly began in 2006.

During the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in July 2024, Savannah Chrisley gave a speech for then-former president Donald Trump, using the platform to address prison reform and her famous parents.

For about a month, Julie Chrisley was in the custody of U.S. Marshals as she traveled to and from her Sept. 25, 2024, resentencing hearing in Atlanta. In October 2024, Julie Chrisley returned to the Federal Medical Center in Lexington, Kentucky.

About the same time, Todd Chrisley was fired from his prison job. Jay Surgent, who represents Todd and Julie Chrisley, told NBC’s “Today” show that Todd Chrisley was removed from his job at Federal Prison Center Pensacola. Todd Chrisley had volunteered “as an assistant to the chaplain at FPC Pensacola for nearly two years and oversaw the setup of Christian, Jewish and Muslim services,” Surgent said in an Oct. 25, 2024, today.com story, adding his client was “disappointed and emotionally offended.”

Surgent told media outlets that Todd Chrisley was “removed from his position because he was ‘communicating with people that had been admitted into’ the prison’s Residential Drug Abuse Program,” adding “no ‘real reason’ for the dismissal was provided, but they believe dismissal came because RDAP participants have ‘access to the outside.'”

The Federal Bureau of Prisons (FBOP) announced in December 2024 that it would permanently close multiple federal prisons across the country, including FPC Pensacola, where Todd Chrisley is an inmate, due to “critical staffing shortage, crumbling infrastructure, and limited budgetary resources,” according to the Associate Press. In a release sent to the USA TODAY Network’s Pensacola News Journal, FBOP said FPC Pensacola, which is a minimum security male prison located on Saufley Field, would be deactivated as a prison to “maximize resources and mitigate safety concerns.”

2025: Trump issues full pardon for Todd and Julie Chrisley, they’re released from prison and back on TV

May 27, 2025: Trump called Savannah Chrisley to let her know he was issuing full pardons for her parents, saying they were “going to be free and clean.”

May 28, 2025: Two years after turning themselves in, President Donald Trump issues a full pardon for Julie Chrisley and Todd Chrisley.

May 29, 2025: The couple was released from FMC Lexington in Kentucky and FPC Pensacola in Florida, respectively, the next day.

June 28, 2025: Todd and Julie Chrisley, along with their children Savannah Chrisley and Grayson Chrisley, appear on “My View with Lara Trump” on Fox News Channel in their first TV interview since they turned themselves in to prison in January 2023.

June 29, 2025: The Chrisleys were featured in another post-prison interview on ABC News Studios’ “IMPACT x Nightline” 100th episode and season three finale of “Life After Lockup.”

July 2025: Todd and Julie Chrisley record a podcast episode, “The Past 28 Months,” on “Chrisley Confessions 2.0.”

August 2025: Todd Chrisley, who served time in the Pensacola Federal Prison Camp in Florida before he was pardoned, returned there to talk prison reform ahead of the prison’s scheduled closure.

Sept. 1, 2025, Labor Day: “The Chrisleys: Back to Reality” show premieres on Lifetime, giving “exclusive access to the family — Julie and Todd from prison and upon their release, Savannah, Chase, Grayson, Chloe, Nanny Faye, and for the first time, Julie’s parents Harvey and Pam.”

Todd Chrisley also reveals the first thing he thought of when he saw his wife, Julie, after his prison release — and the not-so-nice nickname he gave her because of her physical appearance (see video below).
