Kelly Clarkson briefly teared up on-air Thursday when her talk show’s imminent conclusion came up in conversation.
The moment came as Clarkson was chatting with actor and singer Rita Wilson, who is currently promoting a new album, “Sound of a Woman.”
Shortly before their conversation came to an end, Wilson thanked Clarkson for “literally changing the game when it came to daytime television.”
“The fact that you love music, that you have brought so much music to daytime, that you have shared with us your voice, your gifts and everyone else’s, and your incredible band … I really want to thank you because it has made a big change in my life,” she continued. “So thank you, Kelly.”
At that point, Clarkson became visibly emotional and gestured to her camera crew, as if to urge them to stop filming. After taking a moment to compose herself, however, the host leaned in for a hug with Wilson.

In February, Clarkson announced that “The Kelly Clarkson Show” would conclude after its seventh, and current, season. Though no exact date has been publicly confirmed, reports suggest that the daytime talk show’s finale will air sometime this fall.
Prior to Clarkson’s announcement, rumors of her desire to end the show had been swirling in the media for some time. The speculation intensified following the death of her ex-husband, Brandon Blackstock, in August of last year. She and Blackstock are the parents of two children, River and Remy.
Appearing on NBC’s “Today” in February, Clarkson explained why she felt it was the right time to step away.
“Well, I think everybody probably gets the timing. Our family life, the dynamic changed a bit, and it has changed for a minute now,” she said. “You’ve got kids, we’ve all got kids, and it’s one of those things when you kind of start seeing life as how precious it is.”
In her “Today” appearance, Clarkson also clarified that while “The Kelly Clarkson Show” was ending, she intends to continue working in both television and music. In July, she’ll head to Las Vegas for the next leg of her “Studio Sessions” concert residency, and is set to return to NBC’s “The Voice” as a coach for its 30th season this fall.
“I know everybody thinks, like, ‘Oh, she’s quitting.’ I’m like, ‘I still have other jobs,’” the three-time Grammy winner said. “There’s just too much on the plate. So I was like, ‘You know what? It’s time to kind of pull back.’”
