Phoebe Tonkin’s latest series Two Years Later feels like a new spin on the classic romance genre. Following Emily (Phoebe Tonkin) and Ryan (Brenton Thwaites), the acquaintances are seen flirting each morning on the way to work. When COVID-19 sends everybody to work from home, the pair no longer cross paths. Two years later, Ryan runs into Emily again, and he isn’t about to let this chance fall through his fingers. He proposes taking her on eight dates to see if they’re truly compatible. It’s a messy, unpredictable ride, with Emily a far-from-perfect protagonist. But what makes this series so special is that the start-up director and episode directors were all women: Emma Freeman, Paige Rattray and Lucy Gaffey. There’s a special kind of magic that happens when you make romance from a female gaze, and Tonkin tells Refinery29 Australia this is an anomaly, and she’s been working in the industry for over 20 years.
