The Kansas City Royals are running out of time to prove themselves as contenders in the American League.
Their MVP-caliber shortstop, Bobby Witt Jr., is one of the best players in the Majors. But he cannot carry the team on his own.
He’ll need more support from other notable hitters in the lineup, writes Bleacher Report’s Kerry Miller.
“However, Witt is the only Royal with at least 30 plate appearances and an OPS of at least .715, as his supporting cast of Maikel Garcia, Salvador Perez, and especially Vinnie Pasquantino has all taken a big step backward compared to the past two seasons,” Miller wrote.
Pasquantino has been the biggest disappointment thus far. In 2025, the first baseman hit 32 home runs and drove in 113 RBIs.
Fifty-six games into this season, the left-handed swinger has just five homers with 25 RBIs. Pasquantino’s .630 OPS would be a career worst by plenty.

Kansas City is not out of the race completely, but things aren’t looking too great. Their best hope for the postseason is making a change during June and July.
Otherwise, the Royals will be sellers at the trade deadline, and fans will have to wait another offseason for Witt to play baseball in October. He’s doing his part to make sure that doesn’t happen.
