Jun Iida

June 10 and 11
Multiple locations

Jazz trumpeter and composer Jun Iida has an absolutely gorgeous tone and a wide-ranging instrumental vocabulary. His most recent album, “Evergreen,” showcases sounds from hip hop to traditional Japanese music without ever losing its appeal to jazz lovers. After a couple years in Seattle, he’s now based in New York, but he’s coming through for two regional appearances: Wednesday, June 10 at the FireHouse in Bellingham, and Thursday the 11th at the Rockfish in Anacortes.

Channel One Sound System

8 p.m. Wednesday, June 10
The Shakedown, 1212 State St., Bellingham

The streets of Jamaica have long moved to the music of “sound systems.” This is essentially a mobile PA system accompanied by a crew of DJs, MCs and engineers,  who can set up anywhere and spark a party to life. It’s a way of bringing the music directly to people who might not be able to afford the cover at a fancy nightclub. One of the legendary Jamaican sound systems touches down at the Shakedown on Wednesday, June 10: Channel One, hosted by the great Mikey Dread. He has toured with or produced artists as diverse as The Clash, Bob Dylan and Carlos Santana.

Bear Square Fest

June 12 and 13
Main Street, Concrete

Bear Square in Concrete is going to be hopping on the 12th and 13th, with a homegrown festival known as Bear Square Fest featuring a bunch of the best music from Skagit County. Headliners include Nurhachi and the Opines on Friday and Benny Sidelinger and the Enthusiasts on Saturday. The whole thing is a benefit for youth sports and music organizations, and there will be food and art for sale.

Galby Grooves

4–11:50 p.m. Saturday, June 13
The Shakedown, 1212 State St., Bellingham

The success of the Northwest Tune-Up Festival over the last few years has made clear the appeal of combining live music with mountain biking. On Saturday, June 13, the Whatcom Mountain Bike Coalition (WMBC) is taking it one step further with a concert right on Galbraith Mountain, with a stacked lineup featuring Yogoman Burning Band, Reposado and Manatee Commune.
