Having found his courage, Rupert, who continues to attend school and his Beaver group when possible, later stood up and gave a toast to the Queen. Holding his water glass up, he said: “I have a toast to the Queen. Thank you for having this lovely meal. To the Queen.”
Mr Curtis presented the Queen with a bottle of gin, whisky, a clock and outdoor plants. He thanked her for her hospitality, adding: “I can’t tell you how much it means to the families and to the charity.”
“Thank you, this is my husband’s favourite,” she said, as she took the bottle of gin.
The afternoon ended with a treasure hunt – with the hidden prizes being giant gold coins from the Royal Collection shop – found in Grenadier Guards’ bearskin hats.
