The Prince of Wales has paid tribute to Sir Alex Younger, the former head of MI6 whom he said “embodied the very best” of the British secret services.
The Prince, who has close working links with the Secret Intelligence Service and has undertaken periods of “work experience” with them to prepare for his future role as King, issued a personal statement following the news of Sir Alex’s death.
Sir Alex, who was head of MI6 from 2014 to 2020, died on Wednesday from cancer at the age of 62.
The Prince said: “I was saddened to hear of the death of Alex Younger.
“He embodied the very best of what the Secret Intelligence Service stands for – integrity, courage, and an unwavering commitment to protecting this country and its people.
“Britain has lost an exceptional public servant. My thoughts are with Lady Younger and their family.”
The message, shared through Kensington Palace’s social media, was signed “W” for William, suggesting that it was personal rather than from aides.
