7 celebrity exes forced to work together after breaking up

Timothée Chalamet is one of the most recognizable actors of his generation, but many of his longtime fans feel lost. Over the past few years, Chalamet’s public image has undergone a noticeable shift, moving from the sensitive, artsy persona that first attracted many fans to a more mainstream celebrity image. Some longtime followers say they miss the version of Chalamet they first came to admire.

While the reasons behind this shift remain unclear, several factors may have contributed: a shift in roles, a past personality coming back, a new relationship, or even a marketing ploy.

Chalamet began his acting career young, appearing in television shows and commercials. Ultimately, his breakout role was 17-year-old Elio Perlman in 2017’s Call Me By Your Name. This landed Chalamet his first Oscar nomination at 22 years old; he now has had three Oscar nominations: Call Me By Your Name (portraying Elio Perlman), A Complete Unknown (portraying Bob Dylan), and Marty Supreme (portraying Marty Mauser.) However, he has yet to win.

After the release of Call Me By Your Name, Chalamet gained a cult following of young women who were drawn to his sensitive and artsy persona. He wore long hair and feminine clothing, and was funny and spontaneous while still being sensitive.

As he continued to work in coming-of-age stories such as Greta Gerwig’s Lady Bird and Little Women, his popularity among young women continued to grow. He seemed approachable and not out-of-touch like most celebrities—he was like a breath of fresh air.

But before this “soft-boy” persona, there was Little Timmy Tim.

Online, you can find many videos of Timothée Chalamet rapping and carrying himself with more of a swagger than seen in the later 2010s and early 2020s. In many of these videos, he referred to himself as “Lil Timmy Tim” or “Timmy Tim.” These videos have been brought up in interviews over the past few years, and he is not afraid to show this side of himself—he and his co-stars even find the videos humorous.

So how did he go from a young rapper, Lil Timmy Tim, to a reserved ideal indie boy? Since some of his recent public appearances more closely resemble his earlier persona, some fans have questioned whether the “French-boy” that many fans fell in love with was a facade—a way to better market himself to the public.

The artsy “French-boy” image of the late 2010s and early 2020s may have been a natural result of his indie film roles, though some fans argue it was also carefully cultivated. His demeanor, styling, and film choices aligned with the cultural wave of the time. He and his team appeared to understand what resonated with audiences. It was also as if the characters seeped into him. According to Chalamet fan Vivian, “whatever era he was in was totally corresponding to whatever movie he was in.” Some fans believe this consistency between Chalamet’s public image and his on-screen roles helped strengthen audience attachment to his work, as they saw a version of Chalamet they liked on the big screen and then encountered a similar persona at public events. This continuity may have helped maintain interest in his future projects.

Chalamet has also demonstrated a strong understanding of celebrity marketing. His Marty Supreme press tour is one example. The promotional campaign leading up to Marty Supreme was unlike anything Chalamet had done before: orange blimps, Wheaties boxes, unconventional live streams and Instagram posts, pop-up stores with the famous Marty Supreme Nahmias jacket, and standing on the Las Vegas Sphere (being the first person to do so)—all for a film about ping pong. For months, the color orange was the center of everything for this film, leaving some confused as to how little of a role this color actually played in the film.

Around the time of the film’s launch, the hottest thing was the Nahmias Marty Supreme Jacket. From Tom Brady to Ringo Starr to Bill Nye, it seemed like everyone had their hands on one of the jackets. The intensity of the marketing campaign reflected both the film and its central character’s drive for greatness. The campaign stood out for its unconventional approach and generated significant public attention.

Commercially, the marketing stunts for this film did pay off. Marty Supreme became A24’s highest grossing film, pulling $147 million worldwide, surpassing Everything Everywhere All at Once. Chalamet even won two major awards: the Golden Globe and Critic’s Choice.

After the release of the films Dune and Wonka, Chalamet’s audience expanded and he became more of a household name—and even more so with the Marty Supreme campaign. But has this widespread fame gotten to be too much? Some fans speculate that he’s had too much time in the public eye recently.

For years, Timothée Chalamet has seemed nearly impossible to avoid; between his films, his press tours, or his courtside seats at a Knicks game, he’s everywhere. Such oversaturation can eventually lead to audience fatigue. With so much time in the public eye, people can get bored, tired of seeing the same faces over and over again. Audiences often become more critical of public figures who receive constant attention, and Chalamet has experienced this.

Recently, there was an outcry over comments Chalamet made about ballet and the arts. While some critics felt his wording was poorly chosen, others focused on the broader implications of the remarks: a shift in Chalamet’s public image—what some critics perceive as a more arrogant public persona.

As previously stated, it seems like Chalamet takes on attributes of his characters, so some speculate that his arrogance could partly be from his character of Marty Mauser. Mauser, the main character of Marty Supreme, is an ambitious and arrogant table tennis player. Some critics argue that Chalamet’s public persona has begun to resemble the confidence and ambition of Marty Mauser.

In his 2025 Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards (now known as the Actor Awards) acceptance speech for his role as a young Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown, he stated that he is “really in pursuit of greatness” and “wants to be up there [with the greats.]” Some critics and fans were taken aback by the comments because public figures do not typically speak about themselves in those terms; they saw him as cocky and egotistical. Was this Marty Mauser coming through, or was it simply an actor expressing pride in his work?

It is not just this speech or other comments that have drawn criticism; some fans have also expressed concerns about what they perceive as a broader rebranding of his public image.

Another source of criticism has been Chalamet’s relationship with Kylie Jenner. Chalamet started dating Kylie Jenner in 2023, which some see as signaling a shift to a more typical celebrity lifestyle—ditching his long hair, silky suits, and modest lifestyle.

Much of the criticism surrounding the relationship stems from perceptions associated with the Kardashian-Jenner family—they’re out of touch and unrealistic. Fans of Chalamet worry that by dating Kylie Jenner he’ll adopt these characteristics, and some fear that it is already too late.

Chalamet fan Isabella said he now seems “like every straight man on this planet in their 30s—the same haircut, going to basketball games, and dating girls like Kylie Jenner.” Some observers suggest he may be pursuing broader appeal. More men have become fans over the years, expanding what was once a predominantly female fan base.

One of the more peculiar concerns among fans is Timothée Chalamet’s hair—it always seems to be a hot topic. Many fans miss Chalamet’s signature curls, though the attention paid to his hairstyle may seem disproportionate.

The buzz cut that debuted in the fall of 2025 was not entirely his choice; it was reportedly required for the filming of Dune: Part Three, as he is playing an older Paul Atreides. Since the initial cut, his hair has stayed on the shorter side, leading some fans to miss the longer hairstyle that became associated with his early career. The haircut carries added significance for some fans because it coincides with broader changes in Chalamet’s public image. To those fans, the buzz cut symbolizes a final turning point in a new era of his career.

Ultimately, Chalamet’s evolving public image reflects a challenge faced by many celebrities whose careers span multiple stages of life. As audiences become attached to a particular version of a public figure, changes in style, relationships, or personality can be met with resistance. Whether Chalamet’s recent evolution represents a return to an earlier version of himself or the natural progression of a growing celebrity, the reaction from fans highlights the complicated relationship between public figures and the audiences who follow them.
