Hollywood has always been a world filled with stars, but some of the industry’s most memorable stars never walked the red carpet on two legs. For more than a century, filmmakers have relied on talented animals to bring authenticity, emotion, excitement, and unforgettable moments to the screen. Whether appearing as loyal companions, heroic rescuers, comic sidekicks, or majestic creatures, these performers helped create some of cinema’s most beloved scenes.

What makes these animals true stars is not simply their screen time but their extraordinary training, intelligence, and ability to connect with audiences around the world. Many became household names, earned fan mail by the thousands, inspired merchandise, and even received awards usually reserved for human performers. Some of these stars are still remembered decades after their deaths, while others continue to entertain new generations through modern films and television shows. Now it’s time to discover, or revisit, some of the greatest animal stars in Hollywood history.

1. Terry (Toto)

Long before many human actors achieved fame, Terry became one of Hollywood’s earliest canine stars by playing Toto in The Wizard of Oz. Born in 1933, Terry appeared in more than a dozen films during her career. Her performance alongside Judy Garland became legendary, and reports from the production indicate she earned a higher weekly salary than some of the film’s human actors. Terry passed away in 1945, but Toto remains one of cinema’s most recognizable animal characters.

2. Bart the Bear
