KANSAS CITY, Mo. — It’s been a rough season for the Kansas City Royals, who entered Sunday tied for last place in the American League Central at 26-39.

However, the Royals continue looking to turn things around by securing their second straight series win against the Minnesota Twins on Sunday. The final score was 6-5 in Minnesota after the Twins rallied in the ninth inning against recently called-up reliever Beck Way.

Regardless of a win or loss, the Royals have a glaring issue at hand– superstar shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. was removed from the game in the fifth inning with right knee soreness.

The severity of the injury is currently unknown, and the Royals will undoubtedly continue to monitor Witt Jr.’s readiness. For now, fans can hope that the injury will not require an IL stint, especially after just recently getting third baseman Maikel Garcia back on the field after missing time.

Despite the win, the Royals’ bullpen looked inconsistent once again. After six innings of one run ball from Noah Cameron, John Schreiber and Mason Black threw scoreless innings, but Way and Erceg had to combine to close out the ninth. Way gave up four hits and four runs while recording just one out, and Erceg gave up a pair of hits before securing the save.

The Royals will need Bobby Witt Jr. and consistency from bullpen arms for that matter, if they have any shot at getting back in contention for the Wild Card or division race.

MLB.com’s Anne Rogers also shared an update on right fielder Jac Caglianone ahead of Sunday’s series finale as well. He’s dealing with a shoulder injury after taking on the right field wall yesterday.

Rogers updated fans that Cags is feeling better, but is still being evaluated before games for his availability off the bench. The Royals say that there isn’t any structural damage, so there’s hope he can return, “in the coming days.”

Salvador Perez was absent from Sunday’s lineup for the second straight day as well, as he recovers from a thumb injury.
