Based on the life of a rock musician, the upcoming film Abhhiman starring Prosenjit Chatterjee and Jisshu Sengupta will examine the impact of interpersonal relationships on an artiste’s life and work, with an attempt to measure the emotional price of fame. A new song from the film which dropped on Friday is an introspective track that captures the complex layers of thoughts and emotions embedded in the mind of a man who has loved deeply and lost.
Composed by Indraadip Dasgupta with lyrics by Srijato, the song, titled Bhalobeshe jodi, is a deeply nostalgic yet contemporary tune designed to tug at the heartstrings. Its raw, powerful and heartfelt vocals by Armaan Rashid Khan add a poignant texture to the song, sensitively capturing the hurt pride and ego of someone who has suffered heartbreak and is secretly pining for love. While the song explores the bittersweet nature of evolving relationships, the nature of regret, flashes of memories and unspoken feelings, its visuals offer an insight into how the film’s protagonist, rockstar Akash Chatterjee (Prosenjit) slid from peak career success and fame to complete desolation and frustration.
The stark contrast between Akash’s past and present is a highlight of the song. While putting the spotlight on his talent, popularity and adulation, it also points to his vulnerabilities, flaws and frailties, clearly indicating through the story of his life the futility of success without peace and contentment in personal life. It indicates how his divorce and consequent separation from his wife and son had completely shattered him from within, and turned him into a victim of substance abuse. Having declined into depression and dementia, the former star had become a shell of his former self — a forlorn figure, just like the old, overgrown banyan tree against whose shade he is seen resting briefly. What the music video mainly explores though, is the theme of eternal and everlasting filial love and bonding, which is strong enough to overcome constraints imposed by absence, distance, misunderstanding or discord. The song thus focuses on the touching reunion between Akash and his son Ador (Jisshu Sengupta). In it, Ador seeks out his father, and tries to connect with him once more, clearly having forgiven Akash for abandoning the family many years ago. The exchange of unspoken words and emotions between the father and son provide the song its most poignant moments, underscoring each one’s silent longing for the other’s love and affection.
Ador’s love interest, portrayed by Subhashree Ganguly, also plays an important role in the song. Not only does she support Ador in reconciling with his father, but she herself becomes a figure of support for the frail, old and debilitated man. Also, glimpsed in the song is Kanchan Mullick, who probably portrays Akash’s friend from his younger days.
Directed by Indraadip Dasgupta, Abhhiman will release in cinemas on June 19.
