Kurt Russell says he served as a “go-between” for Michelle Pfeiffer and late director Robert Towne on the set of the 1988 film Tequila Sunrise.
The actor explained that there “were difficulties between Michelle and [Towne] in all honesty,” but that it brought him and Pfeiffer closer together.
Pfeiffer told Entertainment Weekly in its The Madison cover story that Russell was her “comrade in arms” on the set of the crime thriller, adding, “He kept my spirits up.”
Kurt Russell is revealing how the 1988 crime thriller Tequila Sunrise brought him and Michelle Pfeiffer closer together.
The 75-year-old actor explained that he formed a strong bond with his Madison costar, 68, because he served as a “go-between” between Pfeiffer and the film’s late writer-director, Robert Towne.
Russell told PEOPLE that “there were difficulties between Michelle and [Towne] in all honesty” and that he often ended up bridging the divide between the Golden Globe-winning actress and Oscar-winning screenwriter on set.

“I was a bit of a go-between as it were,” Russell recalled, before noting that “because of that,” he and Pfeiffer “had a strong relationship.”
He added that he and Pfeiffer “had a great time working together” on the film, which also starred Mel Gibson, Raul Julia, and J.T. Walsh.
Pfeiffer similarly praised her costar while talking to the outlet, explaining that Russell “showed up to support” her daily on set.
“It’s who he is as a person,” she continued. “Whenever I would have a tough day or something, I’d go to Kurt, and he just kind of helped me talk it through.”

Speaking with Entertainment Weekly for our The Madison cover story, Pfeiffer described Russell as her “comrade in arms” on the set of Tequila Sunrise.
“It was a hard show for Michelle. The way it’s set up, it was just not as easy as it was for me or Mel,” Russell explained at the time. “Primarily, Bob Towne was… he wasn’t as much a director as he was an eliminator. He didn’t know what he wanted, but he knew what he didn’t want.”
As a result, he noted that there was “a bit of a struggle” there to find out what worked, with Pfeiffer pointing out that things would “change” often.

“So Michelle and I kind of developed a very…” Russell began. “It was an important go-between as it were, and a way to communicate. She was great.”
“He was my comrade in arms,” Pfeiffer added. “He kept my spirits up.”
In fact, Russell had such a great time working with Pfeiffer on the film that he was inspired to join the cast of The Madison just to share the screen with her again. The Taylor Sheridan-penned series follows the Clyburn family, headed by matriarch Stacy (Pfeiffer), as they attempt to process their grief following the unexpected death of patriarch Preston (Russell).
The series has already shot its second season in order to work with Russell’s schedule, although an official release date has not been announced. In April, Paramount announced that a third season is also on the way.
