*Jay Ellis is taking his talents back to the classroom, proving that even after achieving success in Hollywood, there is still value in learning the skills that can help build a lasting career beyond the screen.

The actor best known for playing Lawrence Walker on HBO’s “Insecure” recently revealed that he completed a program at Harvard Business School, sharing photos from campus and explaining why he felt the experience was necessary at this stage of his career.

“The stuff they don’t teach you on set, I took a class at HBS to learn — the business behind the business,” Ellis wrote. “Best classroom I’ve been in. Even better people to be in it with.”

The post quickly attracted attention from fans and industry observers who praised the actor for investing in education beyond his success in Hollywood. But Ellis is also part of a growing trend among entertainers who are turning to executive education programs to strengthen their understanding of business, leadership, deal-making, and ownership.

Why Jay Ellis Went Back to School

Ellis has spent the past decade building a successful career in front of the camera.

After becoming a fan favorite on “Insecure,” he expanded his résumé with roles in projects including “Top Gun: Maverick” and “Mrs. America.” He has also increasingly moved into producing and developing projects behind the scenes.

That evolution appears to be part of the reason he sought out Harvard Business School.

His social media post emphasized learning skills that are rarely taught in acting classes or on film sets but are critical for navigating the entertainment industry at higher levels. For many performers, understanding contracts, financing, intellectual property, partnerships, and business strategy can be just as important as landing the next role.

As more actors build production companies and pursue entrepreneurial ventures, the line between entertainer and business executive continues to blur.

A Celebrity Pipeline To Harvard

Ellis is hardly alone.

According to Bloomberg, Harvard Business School’s executive education programs have become increasingly popular among celebrities, athletes, media executives, and entrepreneurs looking to sharpen their business skills and expand their professional networks.

One of the school’s most sought-after offerings has been its Business of Entertainment, Media and Sports program, which brings together leaders from across multiple industries to study strategy, leadership, innovation, and growth.

The appeal is obvious. Today’s entertainment landscape demands more than creative talent. Success often depends on understanding how businesses operate, how deals are structured, and how ownership creates long-term value.

For many participants, the classroom becomes an opportunity to gain insights that can influence decisions far beyond their primary careers.

Jay Ellis Joins A Growing Trend

Ellis joins a list of entertainers who have pursued advanced business education while continuing to build their brands.

Among them are Gabrielle Union, who has expanded her portfolio through production and entrepreneurship, and Tyra Banks, who famously attended Harvard Business School’s Owner/President Management Program as she built her business empire beyond modeling and television.

LL Cool J has also participated in executive education programs while growing a career that spans music, television, entrepreneurship, and investments.

The common thread is a desire to understand the mechanics of business rather than relying entirely on advisors or industry gatekeepers.

For entertainers whose careers increasingly involve producing content, launching companies, and building brands, business literacy has become a competitive advantage.

The Ownership Conversation

Ellis’ decision arrives at a time when ownership has become one of the most important conversations in entertainment.

Across Hollywood, artists are seeking greater control over their work, intellectual property, and financial futures. From production companies to investment portfolios, many performers are creating opportunities that extend beyond traditional acting careers.

That shift has made business education more attractive than ever.

Fans responding to Ellis’ post largely celebrated the move as a smart investment in his future, with many describing it as another example of professional growth and long-term thinking. Others noted that executive programs at elite institutions can offer valuable networking opportunities in addition to classroom instruction.

Either way, the response was overwhelmingly positive.

For Ellis, the Harvard experience appears to represent more than an academic achievement. It reflects a broader commitment to understanding how the entertainment industry works at every level.

As actors continue expanding into producing, entrepreneurship, and ownership, Ellis’ journey may offer a blueprint for others looking to master not only their craft, but also the business behind it.
