SEATTLE — The Crocodile, a landmark of Seattle’s music scene and one of the country’s most historic independent venue organizations, has new owners.

The live music venue and bar announced it has successfully concluded its receivership process through a sale to the Comedy Tent, the ownership group behind Upright Citizens Brigade, Abso Lutely Productions, and Pittsburgh’s Bottlerocket Social Hall.

Receivership is a process in which a business can no longer manage its financial problems, and a third-party receiver steps in to take control and protect the interests of creditors.

The venue said in a Monday press release that the transition marks a new chapter for the Seattle institution, aimed at preserving its legacy while positioning it for long-term strength, creative growth, and continued impact for artists, audiences, and the broader music community.

For longtime Crocodile investor and supporter Susan Silver, the sale represents what she described as a meaningful passing of the torch.

“As I step away from The Crocodile, I am confident Jimmy [Miller] and his team will honor its legacy while bringing fresh vision, energy, and opportunity to its next chapter,” Silver said.

Miller, the chairman of the Comedy Tent, said the group plans to keep the Crocodile operating independently.

Day-to-day operations will continue to be run by the Crocodile’s existing Seattle staff, with additional staff and leadership of Comedy Tent’s Bottlerocket Social Hall in Pittsburgh supporting.

The Seattle attorney serving as the Crocodile’s general receiver said the deal preserves more than 100 jobs.

Crocodile General Manager Shaina Foley said the venue has faced significant challenges in recent years, but called the sale a turning point.

“The last few years have tested The Croc like never before, but we’re still standing, and now we’re not going into what’s next alone,” Foley said. “Our new partners get what this place is really about: the soul of it; and what it means to Belltown, to Seattle, and to everyone who’s spent amazing nights with us for more than 35 years.”

“They have the knowledge, resources, and vision needed to reinvigorate The Croc and Hotel Crocodile, and bring the lower floor back to life,” Foley added. “We are more optimistic than ever about what comes next.”

The former Madame Lou’s and Here-After venues will be redeveloped into a new venue experience, expanding on the comedy ambitions of the Here-After while honoring the music of Madame Lou’s.

The Crocodile said all shows currently scheduled at the Crocodile and at other venues around Seattle under the Crocodile Presents banner will be held as scheduled, with all tickets honored. No immediate operational changes are planned for the Hotel Crocodile.

The Crocodile has been a staple of Seattle’s music scene since it was opened by Graham Graham in 1991.

Rolling Stone has ranked it as one of the best club venues in the U.S. and has hosted acts including Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Cheap Trick, R.E.M., Billie Eilish, and Chappell Roan.

Since relocating and expanding in 2021, the Crocodile has added the Hotel Crocodile and two smaller venue footprints to its operations in Belltown.

“The Crocodile is more than a music venue,” said three-year staff member Coco. “It’s community and the human connection that honors the past and provides space for the future.”

“The Croc is the most adaptive and inclusive venue I’ve worked at in my 36 years in the music industry,” Coco added. “I’m excited for our future, our loyal fans, and grateful to be part of our next chapter.”
