LOS ANGELES − The biggest question swirling around the star-studded “Toy Story 5” Hollywood premiere on June 9 has to do with a superstar who doesn’t voice a character in the wildly anticipated animated sequel (in theaters June 19).
Will Taylor Swift show up on the red carpet to make it a “Tay Story”?
The 14-time Grammy-winning singer set “Toy Story”-mania in full tilt when she announced she’d sing the original song “I Knew It, I Knew You” in the fifth installment, a song written by Swift and collaborator Jack Antonoff.
“I’ve always dreamed of getting to write for these characters who I’ve adored since I was a 5-year-old kid watching the first ‘Toy Story’ movie,” Swift wrote on Instagram for her 273 million followers. “I fell instantly in love with ‘Toy Story 5’ when I was lucky enough to see it in its early stages, and I wrote this song as soon as I got home from the screening. Sometimes you just know, right?”
USA TODAY has reached out to Disney and Swift’s representatives for word on whether the superstar will attend. The silence has been deafening.
We’ll be on the red carpet and update − if and when − Swift hits the “Toy Story 5” red carpet.
Could Taylor Swift attend the “Toy Story 5” premiere?
Who is attending the ‘Toy Story 5’ premiere?
Many of the movie’s stars are definitely attending, including Tom Hanks (Woody), Tim Allen (Buzz Lightyear), Joan Cusack (Jessie), Conan O’Brien (the new character Smarty Pants), Scarlett Spears (Bonnie), Greta Lee (Lilypad), Shelby Rabara (Snappy), Mykal-Michelle Harris (Blaze), Craig Robinson (Atlas), Lori Alan (Bonnie’s mom), Jay Hernandez (Bonnie’s dad), Kristen Schaal (Trixie), Tony Hale (Forky) and John Ratzenberger (Hamm).
How did ‘Tay Story’ mania begin?
The “Tay Story” theories began on April 30 when Swift’s official website briefly displayed a countdown featuring “Toy Story”-style clouds and a yellow timer, before disappearing.
On May 29, Swifties spotted billboards in Chicago, London and Dallas featuring the franchise’s signature blue-sky backdrop and the letters “TS” − which could stand for Taylor Swift, “Toy Story” or both.
“Toy Story 5” director Andrew Stanton addressed the rumors during a May 27 YouTube interview at Pixar headquarters with co-director McKenna Harris and producer Lindsey Collins.
“It surprised us. What a freakin’ honor,” Stanton said of the online speculation sparked by Swift’s website countdown and the “Toy Story”-style imagery.
Stanton appeared to squash some fan theories by stating that Swift song’s was not ending the movie. At least, not in the early edits.
“The sad truth is we watched the movie being mixed last week, and the song on the end was not Taylor Swift,” he said.
This carefully worded situation could have changed by the final cut of the film.
Taylor Swift confirms ‘Toy Story’ song ‘I Knew It, I Knew You’
On June 1, Swift dropped the song news, highlighting three versions of “I Knew It, I Knew You,” inspired by the rootin’ tootin’ cowgirl Jessie’s “Toy Story 5” journey.
“It’s incredible just how meaningful it’s been having Taylor write and perform this song. Her connection to Jessie and the immediate way she understood what the character was going through was undeniable,” Stanton said in a statement. “The song is so deeply connected to ‘Toy Story.’ So much so that on first listen, it instantly felt like it had always belonged there, like a long-lost family member. It was kismet.”
